Resolved Question: Fellow philosophers, what are your thoughts on this quote?

"On the whole, small creatures don't live for a long time. But perhaps they do live fast. Let me explain. One of the shortest-lived creatures on the planet Earth is the adult common mayfly. It lasts for one day. The longest-living things are bristlecone pine trees. At 4,700 years and still counting. This may seem tough on mayflies. But the important thing is not how long your life is but how long it seems. To a mayfly, a single hour may last as long as a century. Perhaps old mayflies sit around complaining about how life this minute isn't a patch on the good old minutes of long ago, when the world was young and the sun seemed so much brighter and larvae showed you a bit of respect. Whereas the trees, which are not famous for their quick reactions, may just have time to notice the way the sky keeps flickering before the dry rot and woodworm set in. It's all sort of relativity. The faster you live, the more time stretches out. To a nome, a year lasts as long as ten years do to a human. Remember it. Don't let it concern you. They don't. They don't even know." Thank you maca, if i could id pay myself, but with my mortgage and other stuff im pushing it buying her new skirting!!! LOL she's owner :)  more

Resolved Question: Oiling my cricket bat?

ok, i've had a woodworm now for about 2 years. it has a extratec sheet (plastic protective sheet) on the front and has been rolled and knocked in but not used much in matches. Now i have taken the plastic sheet off and given the bat a sand down. Now i know i need to oil the bat (because i want a natural face now) however is it ok if i used the bat straight away (ie. i started oiling today and want to use it in training tomorrow) thanks guys well, its never been oiled so it'll proberly absorb the initial oiling well, but since its been knocked in and rolled before i guess using at training wouldn't do any damage?  more

Resolved Question: Looking for a new bed?

I am in the process of refurbishing the 'blue bedroom', a room I use for guests, that is located in the west wing of the manor. The four poster in there is riddled with woodworm so I have no choice but to dispose of it. I intend donating it to the village bonfire for the November 5th festivities (along with Grimthorpe, my elderly gardener). I have now to purchase a new bed and need something classical and well-made, preferably carved by the likes Chippendale, Addison or Butler. It has been suggested I visit an exclusive little store called 'High- Key Her'. I believe they produce an selective line in furniture and may well have exactly what I need. Any thoughts?  more

Resolved Question: Two insects needing identification!?

So, I have two small insects that I can't seem to identify [you wouldn't believe the number of hours I've spent looking for them!] Two photographs of each insect can be found here: http://cph.morbidlemon.co.uk/bugsshow.jpg Top one is 2mm long, reddish-brown abdomen/wing casing which is also smooth [not ridged like some beetles], dark thorax/head/legs. Slightly feathered/clubbed antennae, has the 'pointy' bit at the rear of the abdomen. I thought it might have been a woodworm beetle or other pest, but having caught it and looked closely I don't think it is. Bottom one is 3mm long, grey/white [abdomen/thorax/head] with some black speckling. It doesn't have the 'pointy' end [I wish I remembered the proper word for that] like the other. Dark legs, also has slightly feathered/clubbed antennae. Initially thought it was a carpet beetle as I've seen those before, but again on closer inspection I'm not sure it is. Both found near indoor plant pots. What are they? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Will pine wood cladding be okay to use outside (in the garden) or will it rot?

Hi I'm building a decorative frame/fence in the garden and was planning on using some cheap pine cladding from Wickes or B&Q. I'll be using proper treated fence posts to attach this too and there will be gravel boards underneath, so the pine cladding won't actually touch the ground at all. If I stain/protect this (haven't looked at the products available yet but I assume a typical Ronseal fence coating type product will do the job), will this wood be suitable for outdoor use? Or do I have to use the specially treated wood for outdoor use (believe it's a lot more expensive)? I suppose there are other things to consider such as woodworm/bugs etc (I live in the UK so no termite issues for example). Thanks Ross  more

Voting Question: :( i need help with this...does anybody else have the same?

i think i have a phobia. i dont know exactly what of but its things like small dots in groups, holes in things like woodworm, maggots crawling, mould spores, honeycomb etc. i can only say "ugly" things but thats wrong i think because its just how i feel. im not scared of ugly people etc, i just cant describe what im scared of. i turned over the channel to find a bodychock documentary about a a half man half tree. i suddenly went cold an started to cry simply because his face was covered in warts. even writing this now is making me feel nervous an itchy. i decided to cook for my family and as i was washing the potatoes i noticed the markings on the outside were like clusters of dots and i immediatly through the potato an wanted to be sick. when something like that happens i scratch at my neck, arms, hands etc i cant stand being touched either until ive calmed down. i dont really wanna tell people because i think its weird an they miht think im lukin for attention. is it a phobia? im 16 the man in the documentary had warts covering his skin. and i got really scared. i feel really harsh but thats why i want to know if its a phobia (hope that helped)  more
