England Rugby Football Questions asked

Open Question: What are some good names for a fun character?

My character is sixteen years old, and she's English nobility. She's lived in England all her life, but attends a preparatory academy abroad. She's a happy-go-lucky kind of girl, and she always has a smile on her face. She dresses in bright colors (she feels sad if she doesn't), and she's got awesome taste in music; she listens to groups like ABBA and The Beatles. She excels in sports like football (actual football), rugby, polo, swimming, and volleyball. She's good at school, and gets mostly A's. But, she's also stubborn, fiercely competitive, forgetful, sometimes irresponsible and self-deprecating. I'd like for her to have a cool name, but not necessarily something current. Her play-by is Emma Watson, if that helps at all. [: Bah. This wasn't supposed to end up in pregnancy & parenting, but I suppose it could help someone out if they're looking for original names.  more

Resolved Question: Rugby in America...a few questions?

I know - wrong section, but i doubt you read the rugby section...if you know nothing at all, do you know where/when rugby is played...thankyou I live in England and have played rugby for near on 5 years for school (10th best in country at 15's, 2nd best at 7's), Club (projected in the top 10) and county... In my gap year i plan to go out to america and i want to try to get a 'job' training a team, i have no qualifications but have obviously got trained very well myself... Now to the questions; 1. Whats the rugby season in the US/Canada? I'm planning to come over late august till early/late November...is that the wrong time? 2. Where is rugby popular in the US? 3. Where would be a good place to aim for a job? e.g if you came over here looking for an NFL job i would say try the colleges...same there? Or clubs? Or would a Professional team hire me? 4. I'm not looking for much, but i need to be able to earn enough for accommodation (that includes ESPN, i love my american football), plane tickets there and back and food...realistic? Or should i abandon now? 5. What age are the teams there? We start as early as under 6's or 7's and go up to an adult team (so that's 13 teams to be trained and a fair few jobs sorta...). Its just that my club team trains once a week...and it seems a little problematic to go across to america and spend 6 and a half days doing nothing... Any other comments (or even job recommendations) are appriciated Travelin' Man...I did post in the rugby section...i doubt any american people read the the rugby section, it'd be like me asking about english american football in here, i would get nanda...all i really want to know is when the rugby season is in America... Thats fine, if you don't know - i'm just looking for the hybrids, the guys like me who like both sports and know something bout most...and at least more americans will look here I don't care, i want to go to america for ESPN and the american football...i just think coaching would be a goodway to get by...if someone wants to pay me to watch ESPN for a few months please message me  more

Resolved Question: Do people like International english football and England Rugby?

Resolved Question: Fun for the geographically challenged: Midlands East North West v Midlands West South East - in England?

English rugby offers these delightful geographic concepts in the lower leagues for serious, but not brilliant, amateur players. I have long loved their "Southern Counties North" which covers places like Oxford and Slough, and the curiosity that for rugby players Milton Keynes is in the South-West whereas Bournemouth is in the South-East. But in the race for the geographic whirlygig the new structure in the Midlands leaves "South North" standing! Closer inspection shows that Midlands East (North West) is around Uttoxeter and the upper Trent Valley; and Midlands West (South East) is around Coventry and north Warwickshire. Is there any organisation that competes with the English Rugby Football Union for geographical nominal entertainment?  more

Resolved Question: Please help me pick an offensive playbook to buy and study!!?

Hi I have the chance to buy an offensive playbook to study. My options: 1) 2000 Miami Dolphins official offensive playbook (actually used by one of the players) 2) Texas tech offensive playbook from 2002 3) 2004 New England Patriots offensive playbook. My problem: I've never played American football in my life, because I live in New Zealand where football is virtually non-existant and rugby is the most dominant sport. I'm currently at University in my second to last semester and I've decided that maybe after i graduate that i might spend a year or two in the states and try and get a job as a coaching assistant of some kind at a small high school. My dilema though is that because football games are never screened in NZ, all i know about football comes from reading material online and watching the full games that i've managed to download. Thus i've decided to buy a playbook and study the plays in one to better learn the game. So as you can see my dilema at present is which playbook should i go with?? Please help me choose, at present my favourite offense is actually Boise States but nobody seems to have their playbook. Otherwise though I should mention i love pass heavy offenses. Cheers for any help you can offer! actually i can get a 2004 Texas tech playbook Hey froggy_logic Thats actually a good point and i can understand why. Though if i did choose to go with a Texas tech playbook i could get this package (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160250191941&_trksid=p2759.l1259 which is quite enticing. However maybe it would be best to choose a balanced offense like the patriots offense since it generally does so well? (provided Tom Brady is at the helm). Cheers  more

Resolved Question: American Sports V European Sports?

Ok well recently i took a trip to England to visit my cousin, and i have been playing sports here, soccer as most of you know as some really wierd sports called, "rugby" and "cricket" really silly games. Which all 3 are european. Ive played them with people at the park, and stadiums and even visit matches of these sports here. Im from America, just so you know, and whenever i play these sports, i get a vibe that i shouldnt be playing? And players are always calling out for me to pass the ball to them...kind of non team like. When im home and i play good sports like Basketball,Football, Baseball and occasianly Hockey, no one calls out for me to pass and i always get a vibe of friendship and doing your best in the games. Im heading back home, and glad never gonna come back to this crappy continent again, thats for sure. Anyways the reason i asked this is to ask, which sports are better to play? American sports (Football,Baseball, basketball, hockey) or European sports? A hog? WTF? Idiot, you pass when you see someone free, i pass all the time when people are free. Go back to soccer, loser.  more

Resolved Question: My children believed the National Anthem (God Save The Queen) is only sung at football and rugby games.?

Why is the National Anthem not sung or even taught in schools nowadays ? We used to sing it with pride at my school ( 20 years ago) but my kids have only heard it during sports events ! You can't sat it's not PC or anthing like that because it is our National Anthem at the end of the day. Surely if our children are not learning it in school, in case it offends anyone, then what has happened to our National Pride ? I am a white Aglo/Saxon (if I can still say that) and can trace my family back for generations in England. I am not racist to any extent and do not want any comments suggesting the such. I just want to know why our National Anthem is being neglected,,,,,  more

Resolved Question: Rugby vs American Football, which one is tougher?

Alright i know there is a lot of fuss between both of these sports But i would like to know which one is overall tougher Me living in england and play rugby myself will have a biased opinion, but i believe that American Football may be tougher than it looks (i have not seen much of the sport only on certain youtube videos and the odd film). Rugby there are no padding, helmets or breaks. It is just a constant mash up of bodies (mostly the forwards in the games), however a wise person told me that the sport is actually a non-contact sport its only your errors or choices that lead to contact. Oh and in rugby a Scrum and a Ruck are one of the most painfull and gruesome experiences lol. Can someone help me right some pro's about American football so i can find out which one is truly tougher??? thanks  more

Resolved Question: Olympics and Great Britain..?

Why do England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland compete together in the Olympic Games and then they compete separately in competitions such as football or rugby world and euro cups???? Then is it just a question of being effective at the games????? In that case it is a really stupid reason, there are countries competing that are far smaller than each of the UK's countries. I know that you are the UK of GB but is there a better expanation?? Besides, you did not explain why you compete separetely in other international competitions. Resolved Question: what does the success of team GB's athletes in the beijing olympics say about...?

our national football, rugby and cricket teams for eg in england, scotland, wales, northern ireland? particuarly in football (or soccer if you live in the US) where players are paid unbelievably high wages for their club. if you had the choice as an athlete, would you prefer to represent the UK as a nation whilst in the olympics, or as a footballer, rugby player, for eg individually as england, scotland, wales and northern ireland? and if you can offer an explanation as to why. as an additional question, do you agree or disagree with this statement: judging by this olympics in beijing and the last in athens and their increasing medal tally, britain perform better at sports in the olympics than england, scotland, wales, northern ireland at football etc  more

Resolved Question: Astigmatism with coloured contact lenses?

I've just come back from my Specsavers contact lens assessment and am SO dissapointed, I always wanted brown eyes so this was my chance, when the opitician put them in my eyes I wanted them straight away but he put normal ones in first for me to walk around with for twenty minutes. When he put them in I could not see a thing they were so fuzzy and he said it was because of my astigmatism (I have rugby ball shaped eyes and not football shaped) which means I cannot wear tinted contact lenses at Specsavers, instead just normal ones. I was wondering whether anyone knew of any opticians in England where I can buy coloured contact lenses for people with astigmatisms?  more

Resolved Question: Why exactly do we support sports teams and countries?

Come on, let's face it. We all support some team. Whether it's a Premier League football club, the England rugby team or the GB team at the Olympics. But why do we support them? What's the psychological thing behind. We don't benefit from it, we don't get the medal or world cup trophy, so why do we feel so happy when our team does so well?  more

Resolved Question: How is the UK going to get a football team together for the 2012 Olympics?

The UK didn't enter a football team in the Beijing Olympics, just because Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England can't agree to put a team together, and they are all scared of loosing their "la di da" status with FIFA. Isn't soccer is our national sport? How can we possibly host the Olympic Games without a football team? What wrong with the Rugby Union approach and having a British Lions team? It works OK for Rugby Football and doesn't take anything away from the Six Nations Championship. Who can make our Football Associations see sense?  more

Resolved Question: Is Great Britain a country?

If not then why have 3 countries including -Wales -England -Scotland combined in cetain sporting events and not in others. In the Olympics and Rugby League they are Great Britain but in most other sporting events like football, netball, rugby union, squash, cricket, commonwealth games, swimming, hockey ( by which they are called great britain at the Olympics and not in the commonwealth games whilst the world governing body in hockey recognize and rank Scotland, Wales and England separately), and many other sports they are predominately compete as 3 seperate countries. So why do they combine? Are they not competitive enough on the global stage? or is this unfair competition to smaller countries that share a landmass with politically separate borders but compete as a single nation state? Is Great Britain a geographical definition of that island landmass or are they politically separate states? If thats the case then many countries in Europe and else where where many countries share a single landmass with similar governance should be able to compete as a combines team. Like USA combined with Canada to create North America Eastern Europe consisting of Romania, Ukraine , Russia etc Australasia consisting of Nz and Australia. Subcontinent-Sri Lanka, India and Pakistain ...and more..I think that would be fair what do you think. Is Great Britain legal in sporting events such as the olympics and Rugby League despite competing as separate countries in most other sports? or is England just riding the back of Wales and Scotland. ok most is stating the Great Britain is a country. but WHY do they compete as separate countries in some sports and not in others??? Why is there an exception to the Uk and not other areas? ok bluegal1- if you use the example of the USA consisting of 51 states-then why have the USA only competed under the United of America in all sports including the Olympics and not seperate states if you consider Scotland and Wales as 'regions' belonging to England.  more

Resolved Question: If youre an American football fan like me, you must be tired of........?

stupid people that come on here and ask about why we need football pads to play. Then they have the nerve to say that rugby is "tougher". Well no it ain't. America is a hell of a lot tougher than England, or any other country for that matter. Which means that we play our sports a hell of a lot tougher. Get it? Rugby players are WIMPS and the sport of rugby sucks. All you british people comming into this chatroom to diss our sport need to get out. Go hang out in your gay rugby chatroom and talk about tea and krumpets. I'm tired of this. And if you still don't believe me, get all of your f a g rugby teams over here and our 32 teams in the NFL are going to shut you jerks up. Resolved Question: What's the minimum number of people required for a small game of American Football?

I'm from England so don't know much about the sport except what each position does. I've managed to aquire an american football and i'm planning a game at the local park. What's the minimum number required for a smallish game. I think i can probably get 10-12 people together, maybe more. And how do we break down positions on Offence and Defence, like how many should be put in the O or D lines? etc' And is it wise to play considering we don't have helmets, guards etc'? We aren't little kids, we're all around 17-19 years old and a lot of us play rugby anyway. It's going to be difficult to get 11 each side at short notice. The match will begin in about an hour.  more

Resolved Question: Do you think English Premier team should limit the amount of foreign players?

Im not much of a premier league fan but just noticing how the English national team under performs on the world stage when it comes to the big events. Fifa President Joesph S Platter is introducing the quotas to limit the amount of foreign base players. Just looking at the line up of the 2008 champions league final teams in Moscow and there was hardly any home grown english base payers despite having 2 English teams. Maybe less than half. England's failure to qualify for euro 2008 doesnt make it pretty at all. How much money gets poured into the development of the game in England at the junior levels. Maybe miliions. Is it a waste that millions is spent on foreign talent than nuturing English players that have missed out due to the infux of foriegn players. The same would apply (but not to the greater extent as English Football) is European rugby. Places like France and England are increasing signing players from southern hemisphere countries. I mean do fans feel proud of a team who may have won a championship title but are predominately filled with foreign players. Can it be genuinely considered an English victory. what Im TRYING to say is... Has the current system of players recruitment of English Premier League teams affected the OVERALL performance of the national England side on the world stage? RB, you quoted: "When last did England win a cup? A very long time ago and in those days there were NO foreigners. Just look at the price of Engish players. 12 Million for Theo Walcott. He's a real talent but who would pay 12 Million for a 16 year old? Fabregas was free" Isnt tha the point that this question is making?. If it is an excuse to blame foreign players on the poor showing of the England national team then why do they still fail to perform when it counts most? you also stated that 10/22 played in the final were English. Didnt I just point out earlier that LESS THAN HALF of the line up were English? also. Im NOT saying they should ELIMINATE foreign players but to LIMIT the amount that each team can have.  more

I just don't see what all the fuss is about because we "thrashed" the yanks, (sorry but 2 nil against a nation that plays rugby with enough padding to protect against a meteor collision is not a thrashing!!!) football or "soccer i believe it as known as over the pond is not even their third most popular sport and we gloat about a 2 nil "thrashing" it should of been the footballing equivalent of holding a mudget at arms length and repeatedly kicking him in the testicles while he feebly tries to get at you!!!! agree or disagree??? morning nick, be glad you where at work mate, it was 90 minutes of sycophantic commentating about "brave john terry this and stevie gerrard that" the other players might as well not have been there!!! i know it should have a k but last time i put a k every answer i got said that i'd spelt it wrong lol!!!! lol sorry hitchin was too busy ranting to check my spelling, mudget is of course midget lol!!! hahaha nice one jude!!! i personally am a scotland fan for similar reasons but at least i get to wear a skirt and get drunk!!!  more

Resolved Question: Revoke the independence of the United States of America?

This was sent out a few years ago as a joke. Apparently, an American came up with a reply. Does anyone know what it was? Thanks To the citizens of the United States of America, in the light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy. Your new Prime Minister (The Right Honourable Gordon Brown MP, for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a Minister for America without the need for further elections. The House of Representatives and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect: 1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium." Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour'; skipping the letter 'U' is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee') and the suffix "ize" will be replaced by the suffix "ise." You will learn that the suffix 'burgh' is pronounced 'burra' e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to re-spell Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you can't cope with correct pronunciation. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up “vocabulary." Using the same thirty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "uhh", "like", and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed." There will be no more 'bleeps' in the Jerry Springer show. If you're not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn't have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary, then you won't have to use bad language as often. 2. There is no such thing as "US English." We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of "-ize." 3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. English accents are not limited to cockney, upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents --- Scottish dramas such as "Taggart" will no longer be broadcast with subtitles. While we're talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is "Devon." If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become "shires" e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire. 4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors to play English characters. British sit-coms such as "Men Behaving Badly" or "Red Dwarf" will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness. Popular British films such as the Italian Job and the Wicker Man should never be remade. 5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through. 6. You should stop playing American "football." There are other types of football such as Rugby, Aussie Rules & Gaelic football. However proper football - which will no longer be known as soccer, is the best known, most loved and most popular. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US Rugby sevens side by 2010. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not played outside of North America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called "rounders," which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs. 7. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don't believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public. 8. The 4th of July is no longer a public holiday. The 2nd of November will be a new national holiday, but only in Britain. It will be called "Indecisive Day." 9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap, and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour. 10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call 'French fries' are not real chips. Fries aren't even French, they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called "crisps." Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers. 11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself. 12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling "beer" is not actually beer at all, it is lager . From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer," and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as "Lager." The substances formerly known as "American Beer" will henceforth be referred to as "Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine," with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as "Weak Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine." This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in the Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion. 13. From the 10th of November the UK will harmonise petrol (or "gasoline," as you will be permitted to keep calling it until the 1st of April) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, adopt UK petrol prices (roughly $6/US gallon -- get used to it). 14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun. 15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy. 16. Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776). Thank you for your co-operation. Contact InfoWebsite: www.fco.gov.uk Office: Foreign & Commonwealth Office Street: King James Street City/Town: London, United Kingdom The clean version please.  more

Resolved Question: Why are football players not as proud of their national anthems as rugby players.?

At the cup final yesterday only a couple of players from each side bothered to sing their own anthems, and even then were only mouthing the words.I've noticed this in international matches too. Contrast this with rugby players (from Wales, England,Scotland, Ireland, South Africa,New Zealand,Australia....) who sing their anthem with pride and the emotion really shows on their faces. I wonder why this should be. Dave J...good point about yesterday's game but this also happens in internationals. paulsupe...what ARE you on about? Andy W....does anyone actually know what the English anthem is?...there are many conflicting views on this.. 'Land of hope and glory'..perhaps? Spike...good point.  more

Resolved Question: Are there any sports NOT of European origin?

Golf, soccer and curling come from Scotland. American football owes it's existence to England's game of Rugby (from the school of the same name). Basketball started in Great Britain as net-ball and baseball developed from the old English game of rounders. The list goes on and on, from tennis to darts, rowing to skiing and all other winter sorts. Then there's boxing, wrestling, fencing, cricket, badminton, lacrosse, equestrian sports and bio-mechanical one's like cycling and Formula- One racing. Indeed, the list of European sports ( British, in particular) and those of European origin is so lengthy that it would be impossible to enumerate them all.  more

Resolved Question: One thing I hate....?

I'm from England where the main sport is Rugby, and it still is my main sport but i also pay a keen interest in American Football =] I support Tampa Bay, because they are the closest NFL team to our house in Orlando, Florida I stayed up all nite on a sunday to watch the Superbowl (from 10.30pm to 5.30 am!) and it annoys me when people patronise American Football PLayers for wearing padding I think that Rugby is the rawer game, with a lot more teamwork and sheer grit in it, but i think American Football is the rougher  more

Resolved Question: Question!! Do you think it would be a good idea if the Queen ruled the US ?

In the light of your failure to elect a President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. The 98.85% of you who were not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for "shit". 8.
