Open Question: What's wrong with a smith machine? What are the alternatives?

I'm thinking about getting a smith machine but I don't have alot of information on it. I hear alot of complaints about it because it does not use stabilizer muscles. I know this to be true, but say I don't have a spotter, are there any alternatives? What are the alternatives if I do have a spotter? What if I do some free weights at my gym (school) and do the Smith machine when I can't do free weights. Is that bad? Any info on it. I like the smith because I can afford it (I'm 14) its $850 and i can do leg curl, leg press, leg lift, preacher curl, chest press, bench press, incline press, overhead press, squats, shrugs, deadlift, powerclean, lat pull down, row, chin ups, dips, and more. Currently all I have in the way of a gym is a 5-30 lb barbell thing, a treadmill, and a flat bench. But what's so bad about the Smith machine, what are alternative machines, and is it OK to use the Smith machine if I use it in moderation?  more

Im a mum of 2 and sick to death of putting on weight every time i try to stick to a diet. i tried eating fruit and veg and little carbs but can never stick to it. i love veg and healthy dinners but i have a bad habbit of eating late at night and beer at the weekends. my life style with a damaged pelvic area means im limited to certain exercise. i cant do sit ups rowing machines and a lot of other running activities that are good for weight loss. im gettin really depressed over my weight. i had a flat stomach after my 2nd child and weighed a stone less then as to what i am now. How can i stick to a diet and how can i loose weight through exxercise that is gentle on the back and pelvic area please help!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know this is weird question. It's just that I've seen professional female rowers on TV and they tend to have the appearance of a wide upper body, in their arms and shoulders - and I don't want that. Resolved Question: Good 45 min workout daily for strength/mass?

32 y/o male - average ht and wt. I have about 45 min to 1 hour each day to work out in the fitness center at my work. I have access to mostly cable machines with very few free weights. For a few months now I have doing the following: Chest/back 1 day: chest - sitting chest press and flys, back - lat pull downs and rows Arms/Shoulders 1 day: Single arm iso curls and over the head tricep extensions (triceps with barbell), shoulder press and straight arm extensions. I alternate back and forth between those 2 for now, usually with days of all cardio in between to break it up, and abs thrown in at the end. No legs for now, recovering from knee surgery. Question - what type of reps/weight combo should I use to build mass? Right now it's 4 sets of 8/10 of each at about 75%. More weight, less reps? More reps, less weight? Change everything?  more

Some friends are going to a concert tonight at Mohegan Sun. Since it's a show night there, they raise the minimums at the blackjack tables to 15.00, and they fill up quickly, so the only ones left are the 50.00 a hand tables. Since I don't feel like spending that much money, I figured I may try the video Blackjack. Does anyone know if it follows the same rules as just a regular slot machine, meaning, it's just random payouts? Someone told me that it detects your bet amount, and if you do something like, lose 4 hands in a row at 1.00 a hand, then decide to bet 20.00, you will lose automatically, until you bet goes back down. Today was my back day after 9 day break and i was the weakest guy in my whole lifting carrer here it goes For my last set of lat pulldown i got 150*6-8 I usually get 170*8-10 For barbell rows i usually get 185*8 total i got*6 and 205*2 which i usually get 4-6 reps And for cable rows i usually get 250*3-5 for final set today i got 250*3 half reps And for dumbbell rows i usually get 120*2 today i struggled with 105lbs*2 For machine rows i usually get 450*5 today i got 450*3 half reps And the whole time of my workout i felt like throwing up and felt like i was the weakest guy in the whole damn world. Help. I eat tons of carbs and protein even though it is the strength season. Na this is light weight.Anything lighter i cant workout with.I hate dealing with light weights.No offence to you.  more

I've been meaning to talk to my doctor about this but he's tough to get a hold of I was hoping someone with either medical or physical therapy experience could take a shot at this question for me... I've just finished the first of a three month healing process for an open tib-fib fracture. I'm starting to pull my hair out with boredom and was have starting rowing (with my good leg only ) on my rowing machine. Is this a bad idea? 2 weeks before in the gym i was doing 230 on the hammer shoulder press and one women came up to me and touched my chest and told me nice shirt. Another day i was doing 450 for 5 reps on the machine rows which is the max the machine could hold and a women came up to me and called me hercules. Another day i was doing 275*4 on a bench with a spotter and the women standing there was looking at me idk what for. Today at work i was wearing this walmart large shirt and this one chick was looking at me all the time. Also when i was in college in my writing class 2 chicks came up to me and told me they want to be my essay partner and they asked me how much i bench i said 275*4 and asked me how much your arms measure i said 16.2 inches and told me i was one strong and big guy. I personally dont think i am strong and big. Then they asked me what nationality am i and i said indian and they got shocked and they told me i never seen an indian guy this big and powerful not exagirating and when i told them i dont eat indian foods they asked why.I said lot of carbs.I eat protein foods. I belong to a gym so without trying I see other men's penises and quickly look away (Gross!) However, we all make mental notes. Then I will be at home after showering and I look in the mirror and I realize: Ok this s&*t is ridiculous. Did I have a twin that died in utero and I got his and my penis or something? And If I see a hot chic and start to get hard, forget it I cant hide it. I have to pull my t shirt down over it or sqeeze it between my legs to push the blood back out. Either way, I have to stop focusing on my work out. I cant even work out on a machine where your legs have to be to close together or: Mr President will be very unhappy. When I am standing infront of a group or talking to people I have to be aware of what I am doing or I get these giggles and smiles from chics. Suddenly In the end our class was in a big circus and so there was many seats and there where 2 rows so I was the 1st one in line and I went to the 1st row and then I saw my crush in the second row and so I went to the second row but I was still far away from my crush then after I moved then brandi said "Cmon you where leader and you made us move here for no reason?!?!" she said but I just ignored her then somehow I appeared next to my crush out of no where it just went like poof! But then I saw my 1st crush!! My 1st crush came up to me and told me "Can you come with me" and I said yes and my 2nd crush was looking at me going with my 1st crush and he looked at me with a serious face (he was jealous) and well I went with my 1st crush and he went to a basketball machine and I said "Are you suppose to be doing this" and he said "i don't know" then my gym teacher came and told him to keep shooting good and well after that we both went in the circus and when I got in suddenly everyone disappeared and so did my 1st crush! And I saw a singer with little kids I went up to her and I said "Hey miss do you know where my class is" and well she was like "Don't disturb me don't you see I'm singing for these little kids....there outside!" she said." and I went outside then suddenly I appeared at lunch again where all of my class where sitting on the 1st row except for my crush and me (Not my 1st crush) we both where at the 2nd row but I was at least 6 chairs away from him. All we did is smile at each other. That was the end. Its kind of special because me and my crush always sit next together. (well almost) And I don't even think about the 2 of them that much! I am going to start when I finish school (10th December) and go until I get back (20th February) I'll be using a rowing machine. I am 5'5 (170cm) and weigh in at 75kg (165lb or pounds) btw I am a guy of 14 :p I want to get around the 40 maybe 50 (88lb or 110lb) but I also want to gain mussel ( i know wrong spelling >;[ ) So how long should I work out on the rowing machine for a day? And how long can I break for in that time? (so eg if it's an hour can I break for 5 mins for every 10 mins I work out?) And how do I gain the mussel ? And my diet is really crap atm (you know how it is with sleepovers...) so what should I begin to eat? We are looking to buy 5+ acres in the Skowhegan area of Maine. We do not want to be in a subdivision with fees, restrictions, and covenants, etc... The property we are looking at is; strictly land with a 50' WIDE ROW. We would eventually like to build a camp/cottage type of home on this land. How do we go about getting permits, and WHAT kind of permits will we need? We are big DIY'ers, and would either have it framed, or bring in a quonset hut type of building, and finish it ourselves. Driveway permit? cost? What type of foundation is required? Can we rent a machine, dig it, and use sona tubes? Do we need permits for every step, or what? How easy is it to do this? Any first hand knowledge would be appreciated. The problem with the building inspector, is that many of these small towns share resources. I'm not exactly sure where to find the building inspector. They don't have a website like most MA, towns do. I could have at least gotten a name and phone number. I will ask the Real Estate agent if she knows who to talk to? I just don't want to tip my hand just yet, we are just in the very beginning stages of inquiry on this listing.  more

I'm a chick who has recently been eating better and working out 4 to 6 times a week. See, I want to get a nice flat stomach, along with lean arms and legs but I'm worried about ending up looking too athletic. I want to keep a nice feminine slim but soft look going on. How can I do this? And another question I have: Will the rowing machine at the gym end up making my shoulders look wider? My back is already a little bit wider than that of most girls so the last thing I want to do is make it broader. By the way, I am not overweight. I very stupidly went directly into my rowing exercises again after a long break, this is mainly a rowing machine but it also involves push ups and abdominal crunches. The first day I felt a bit of strain immediately after but it quickly disappeared so I thought nothing of it. I repeated the exercises the next day and again fine, but when I woke up this morning it was so painful. Right now it feels like someone has repeatedly punched me under the ribs, I can touch it lightly and gently knead the muscles but too much pressure really hurts. I can't stand upright because it pulls and hurts so badly across my diaphragm, deep breaths are out unless i'm really slouching and if I happen to cough or sneeze it's agony. I've been cuddling a hot water bottle most of the afternoon which did help a bit, but paracetamol pain killers don't see to be touching it. I'm pretty sure it's a torn muscle, does anyone have any advice about relieving the pain?  more

Resolved Question: help with longstanding problem with Fifa games on pc platform?

hi i was wondering if someone could help me out with a longstanding problem ive had. i have been a regular user of fifa football games from fifa 98-2008 on many a windows operator. However since using xp and briefly vista,in the past 2 years, from fifa06-08 (currently using fifa world cup 06). i have had to put up with all several problems. all too often they crash to desktop, during mid-game, in menu, or even while loading the program. from time to time the game will freeze, and when this happens 1 of 2 things occur. These are 1) the pc reboots itself and says its recovered from serious error, or 2 machine does nothing, monitor sqitches off and i have to manually restart. Sometimes the game runs fine over a period of 5-6 matches in a row, but on many occassions ive had to reboot 5 times in a row, eventually giving up. Now ive tried updating my sound card (creative soundblaster), graphic card (nvidia geforce6 series), uninstalling, reinstalling the game. Ive looked on ea forums, but they only describe one or 2 probs,so not really helpful. unfortunately all i have is football games on my pc, so i havnt used the opportunity to try other games out. These problems also happened on another pc i had previous to my current one, which also had a nvidia graphics card (64mb) I mustnt be the only person on earth having this problem, so it would be great if someone knew the answer I fear it still may be to do with incompatibilty of graphics card, but surely there must be patch to solve that problem. if someone could help me out with this prob it would be brill  more

QUESTION - I played ntsc version of saints row 2 in my x box pal 360 and Saints row 2 is broken (I copied it to my harddrive before hand so i still have the game though yipee!!). Do you think my other new NTSC games will break in the same way if i use them in my pal x box 360 machine? I bought saints row 2 online, i play it in a pal x box 360 SAINTS ROW 2 was an ntsc region. It worked fine on my console. Today the edges of my disk changed to turn a different shade of silver. As if a shadow was cast over part of the disk, its hard to explain, it looks like somebody knocked a silver cup of coffee on my disk. The disk is broke. Is this because i am using a ntsc disk in a pal machine, or is the disk just genrally faulty?  more

Voting Question: X BOX 360 PAL VS NTSC HELP!!!!!!!?

I will start by explaining that 3 weeks ago i have bought Saints row 2, Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, Smackdown vs Raw 2009 and end war for x box 360 on e bay sealed and new which is mostly all good and well. However my problem is this friends, I live in the UK and my console is pal, and all my new games are NTSC, i have my console settings to pal - 60 which my tv supports and graphically it is all fine.....i didnt know the difference between pal and ntsc before today, (After i bought my games). All the ntsc games i bought (listed above) are american made ntsc as opposed to my English pal x box 360, and all worked fine until today, I've had my games about 3 weeks, i was playing ntsc saints row 2 on my pal 360 when the game froze when loading up a helicopter. So i took the disk out and realised that a third of the disk around the edges had lost its silvery colour a little bit, it was a slightly different shade of silver than the rest of the disk, almost like someone had spilt a cup of silver coffee on the edge of my saints row 2. this encouraged me to research the whole pal and ntsc issue cause i didnt know why the edges of my disk had slightly changed colour, it was then i realised my system was pal and games where ntsc. (All my other 5 ntsc games i got work on pal and all are new sealed games). I am new to the whole pal ntsc debate i just revised it all today, so any clued up input on the below questions is much much appreciated, cause after-all i dont wanna do (my buddy) my pal (parden the pun) x box 360 any harm, so am appealing to you beautiful clued up gaming-tech-people to enlighten my soul to the answer of 1 or to all 6 of the below questions and for the best answers you can give i am forever en-debted to you all !!!!!!!!!!!!! QUESTION - Was it right for me to put all 5 ntsc games up for sale on e bay today or should i have kept them anyway for my pal machine. (I thought if the other 5 ntsc games break in the same way ntsc saints row 2 did i won't be able to recuperate any of the money i spent on the games in the first place). QUESTION - If a game says NTSC on the back of the cover but it is stated as dual region on a game compatibility website, and plays fine in my pal 360 is it Dual region or ntsc? Again Apologise for the length of this, but i couldnt have got answers to my questions if i was to ask them 1 at a time, (you wouldnt understand exactly what i was talking about without a proper explanation). Lots of people are really lost on this subject these days from what i can tell, so i feel this thread could help many other people as well as myself.
