I am getting really down abut my body after my second child has just turned one, I am realising just how awful I have let myself become and how much I have neglected my body, so I want to get back in shape. The thing is we don't have much spare cash as we are both mature students so going to gym is out of the window. I do, however, have a rowing machine. If I used this every day would this help me to loose weight or is it only really any good for toning up? I will be eating healthily, no faddy diets etc so I am okay there, just a little unsure of the exercise side. Any constructive help is greatly appreciated! =D Hi Hather, thanks for that pointless answer. I installed our rowing machine in my room and for the first five days I admit I overdid it, I rowed for about 1/2 an hour a day & I'm really not in shape from the start (I just don't get enough exercise). I also probably wasn't rowing the right way. So after those five days I just ached EVERYWHERE, and I stopped using the rowing machine. Now I don't ache anymore, and I tried using the machine for a few minutes yesterday, and my back started to hurt a bit. Right now it's still hurting a bit (lower back) but I'm wondering: Should I just ignore the pain (which is pretty light really) and start using the machine again, gradually this time? Just a few minutes every day, I mean. Since then I figured out HOW to use the machine. I really need advice on this because I don't want to harm myself if I haven't done so already! moreVoting Question: Weight training and rowing machines?
I've done rowing before, both on rowing machines in the gym and an actual row boat out on the river for exercise. I like this form of cardio. I'm a thrower on a track and field team and we have lifting Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. Our lifting workouts will have either squats, lunges, or box step ups with a bar for lower body, an upper body workout like a military press and then a misc. upper body lift such as bicep or tricep curls, and then a compound exercise with either power cleans or snatches. It changes every week; but every practice we have the lower body lift, upper body, and then either cleans or snatches plus an abdominal routine. We also have throws practice Monday-Friday. Since our lifting workouts tend to be full body, would I also be able to use the rowing machine on these days? Not necessarily for HIIT which would be difficult, but just a cardio workout for 30 minutes. I like HIIT but I'm thinking that for Tuesdays and Thursdays and not on the lifting days. Also, if I was to do the rowing machine on lifting days, would I be able to do this right after lifting or should I wait? I mean I could change this, but I have to come in from out of town to use the weight room. I'd rather be able to get my lifting and any cardio done in one trip rather than coming back. Lifting and throws practice are spread by 4-5 hours so I'd have a rest between those. Thanks! moreResolved Question: How can i shrink my thighs?
I have been a member of a gym for 2 months now. I go 2-3 times a week and work out on average for an hour and half at a time. I usually do a variety of exercises. Including a combination of running (every visit), bike, rowing machine & wave machine. I also incorporate resistance machines for inner & outer thighs (20kg 3 sets x 18 reps each), leg curls & leg extensions (10-15kg 3 sets x 16 reps each). I also use arm weights but this area is not so much of an issue. Is there anything i can change to encourage my thighs to reduce in size? I am not overweight as am about 130lbs (and have in fact put on weight in the past month but i am not sure if that is due to the fact that i may have increased muscle mass) it's just i have big thighs in proportion to my overall size. Please help... So what is the best thing i can do at the gym to make them smaller and more toned? I tried doing yoga but i wasn't really all that keen. Are there any cardio machines that are good for legs? moreResolved Question: Wear to a feet tickle torture session/ the gym?

I am going to start when I finish school (10th December) and go until I get back (20th February) I'll be using a rowing machine. I am 5'5 (170cm) and weigh in at 75kg (165lb or pounds) btw I am a guy of 14 :p I want to get around the 40 maybe 50 (88lb or 110lb) but I also want to gain mussel ( i know wrong spelling >;[ ) So how long should I work out on the rowing machine for a day? And how long can I break for in that time? (so eg if it's an hour can I break for 5 mins for every 10 mins I work out?) And how do I gain the mussel ? And my diet is really crap atm (you know how it is with sleepovers...) so what should I begin to eat? I used to eat only 30g of Saturated Fat a day but then I was eating only small things and it was to little. Can anyone help? Thanks, God Bless , ~ MITD. moreResolved Question: Trying to build muscle?
I'm 16 and I've started lifting weights and trying to build muscle in the past month or two. Where I'm at right now is that every two days I (try to) work out, and that includes: 3 sets of 30-50 situps 1-2 sets of 10 pushups (I don't like pushups) 3 sets of 6-8 bicep curls (15-20 pounds) 3 sets of 6-8 overhead tricep extensions (5-10 pounds) 3 sets of 6-8 single arm rows (25-30 pounds) 3 sets of 6-8 front raises and lateral raises (5-10 pounds) 3 sets of 6-8 chest presses (15-20 pounds) Now, I'm still not very muscular, and I'm sure I'm missing some super-important exercises I should be doing. I'm not really doing it for a sport or anything, just to be a bit more attractive for girls. I don't want massive muscles, I just don't want to be anorexically skinny or slightly chubby with no muscle. At the same time, i still have some fat I want to get rid of so that my abs are actually visible and such. I assume I'll have to do cardio to lose that fat though. What can I do at home without buying a machine? Any suggestions for exercises I'm missing (ideally just using a dumbell or a barbell)? moreResolved Question: Am I Exercising Right?
ok i am trying to lose alot of weight. my grandmas driveway is pretty long (we live in the mountains) and it is straight up hill. I used to barely make it up when i didnt exercise but now i am able to walk up it many times in a row. I have noticed that by doing up-hill walking I have gained ALOT of muscle in my legs. I dont know the official name of the muscle but when i flex my leg the muscle really pops out! lol But am i doing this correct? I ususally walk up the driveway about 3 times and then when i get back up I do crunches. I also stich to 1800 calories. I weight about 375 and i am a little over 6 feet in height. I cant afford fancy machines or a gym membership so i am pretty limited. Would I also benefit by a weight bench for some weight training? your advice is very appreciated =] moreResolved Question: Help with weight lifting routine?
I used to go to the gym a lot, after graduation I stopped going. Now I'm getting back into it and can't remember the routine I used to use, that I really liked and worked well. I plan on a 6 day a week routine, possibly seven (a day or two of just cardio). I only enjoy one or two exercises per muscle group so can anyone help match up what to do on what day? Here are my exercises: Military Press/Arnold press, Leg press, calf raises, bicep curls, triceps kickbacks and extensions, Seated row, Chest press machine, one arm rows, leg curls and extensions. I may be forgetting something, so if you have suggestions, please. I also never know how to work my abs, and haven't enjoyed anything I've tried. Cardio options: I run for 30 minutes, but I'd like to mix it up. Swimming, biking, rock climbing?, any other options? I always do a 10-20 minute cool down shooting baskets I'm doing this to get back into shape (endurance wise, and shed a few pounds I've added since graduation). Thanks for all your help. moreVoting Question: Im 16 and dont know whether to concentrate on machine weights or free weight in the gym?
These are the machines my gym has: Lateral Deltoid Ab Crunch Leg Press Lat Pull Down with tricep rope press down Adductor/abductor Leg Extension Leg Hamstring seated curl Machine chest press Pec Dec Shoulder press-machine Tricep Dip machine Upright row machine Bicep curl machine Calf raise machine Pullover Hyper extension machine Upper body chinning and dipping-ive never used this There are numbers on the machines that tell you what order to do them in, I usually follow this and with 2 sets of 12-15 of each exercise with a comfortable weight. After an hour of this i go into the free weights room and do seated hammer curls and standing arm curls(not alternating) with 7.5 kg dumbells. Then i usually do to the Bench Press with stabalizer and do some incline presses and flat bench presses with 20 kg(not including the weight of the bar) i do 20 mins of cardio- usually split into 10 mins warm up and 10 mins cool down-bicyle and treadmill(level 6 out of 12) Is this a good workout? Someone i knew had one, but because he moved he gave me alot of stuff he couldnt take with him including this rowing machine, which i thought may come in handy. Id like to lose some weight and exercise more. Is it good for burning the calories? Also, what part of the body does it tone up!??? moreResolved Question: Help with my workout routine?
I just started a new workout routine after about 3 months off and I wanted some input. I'm 18, Male, and 115~120 kg (fat not muscle), 6"2~3 but have surprisingly good stamina for someone as overweight as me. 45 minutes power walking a day on a treadmill with no incline resulting in about 250 calories burnt according to the machine 3 sets of 8 reps @ comfortable weight for bench, the one where you face the machine and pull it toward you, like a weighted row, and the one where you pull the top bar thing down. I do the weights every 2 days on a home gym machine. Also available to me in my home gym: elliptical/x trainer, leg press, and the one where you move your hands together. And also free weights and a real bench. I am wondering mainly: should I use the x trainer instead of the treadmill and for how long? Or perhaps alternate? (I much prefer the treadmill) is my weight training good or should I change up the reps/sets/weight/exercises/frequency?? The goal is to lose weight fast. my parent said if i can lose 20-30 kg by December they'll buy me an Armani suit. P.S sorry i don't know all the weight exercise names, hope you can workout what I'm talking about. moreResolved Question: What is the best type of sneaker for exercising on a rowing machine?

ive had knock knees since i was about 5, i went and saw an orthopaedic doctor who offered an operation but my mum said no... my right knee has extra bone in, i think its called birpatite patella or something, anyway the patella fuses together differently, so my anatomy of my knee is different to other peoples i am 16 and work out about 3 to 4 times a week i also walk pretty much everywhere about 2 months ago my right knee really started hurting when i was running, i could only run for about 10 mins without pain, theni realised that it felt like it was going to give way and something was catching when i was cycling, also when on the rowing machine the pain is so cringing i cant bear it, it gives me the shivers. i went to the doctors, but my GP was on a sabbatical so i saw a locum or something, she said that i needed to build my quads up.. and my knee was just getting used to the exercise now i can no longer run on my knee and going up and down stairs hurts, it also feels like its gonna give way, the only exercise that is bearable is cycling and cross training, i cannot do any leg weights as my knee doesnt feel strong enough i have tried to build all the muscle and i am noticing that just under my right knee on the left side there is some swelling after exercise i am going to go back to see my GP sometime soon but shall i continue exercising? and what do you thinks wrong oh and the only trauma i can think that happened to my knee was when i went skiing in april.. and twisted it, that swelled alot, but cleared up within a few days moreResolved Question: Workout for 15 year old rower?
Hey, I'm 15 years old, about 5ft 11.5 and roughly 150 pounds. I usually row regularly (4-5 times a week) but I have not been rowing recently through the summer holidays. I was wondering what sort of work-out I should do (how many reps-sets) and which machines to use. I have recently joined a gym which has a good variety of weight and cardio-vascular machines and a swimming pool also, so I'm not short of equipment. For rowing I need to have good endurance, fitness and strength, and I am a little confused about what workout plan I should follow as I don't want to be the wrong build for my sport. As it's the summer and I haven't be rowing, I am not doing the 4-5 rowing sessions a week, so I would like to know what workout plans I should follow to get me into good shape for when rowing starts again and what/how much I should do/lift, and how often. How much/often I should lift/exercise during the season would be helpful also. Sorry that this question is so long it's just that there's aren't any 15 year old 150 pound rowers who have asked questions about this that I have seen. By the way, I have a back problem which my chiropractor says could be solved/helped greatly by building my core muscles (and maybe trying palates) so bear this in mind if possible... sorry that my question is so long and dull! moreResolved Question: Is anyone over 300 pounds?
I'm 21, 5-8 and over 300 pounds. I have tried unsucessfully for over 7 years to lose weight. The past 6 months I have spent at least 5 days a week at the gym, doing cardio(the eliptical) weight training and using the rowing machine. I have also cut out most carbs(all bad, i only eat whole wheat, and really only everyother day) and eat mostly lean protien and a lot of veggies and fruits. I have not lost more than 5 pounds in the last 6 months. Im sick of people just saying to cut down on the food(because I have a lot) and exercise and the weight will come off because it hasn't. Im thinking of getting a lapband on my stomach. My father even said to me he thinks i should go on diet pills, like trimspa or another diet pill thats not that healthy. Its getting really aggrevating because I am doing everything I can possibly think of to lose this weight. Can anyone give me any other ideas? I have PCOS which does make my metabolism a lot slower than normal. I was put on medication but it did not settle well at all. Like would throw up everything I ate. I'm never sore but I can just barely finish my sets.
I just want to make sure that when I go to the gym for my back workout, that I'm doing it right. I do lat pulldowns, seated cable rows, seated machine rows, and I work my traps. I use enough weight to get 3 sets of 10-12 reps for each exercise. I use Size On but I rarely feel sore the next couple of days. Am I doing something wrong? moreResolved Question: Basic Diet Question...?
Ok, I'm 18, female, 5' 7", 165 lbs., and am currently taking the equivalent of 18 hours of college classes (and will be until Christmas). So my situation is fairly stable as far as that goes. There is a gym on campus which I go to between 3 and 4 times a week. When I go I use the stair-master (3 sets of 15 mins), walk the track (totaling about 1/2 a mile by the time I leave), stretch, and use a rowing machine (2 sets of 6 mins). I am taking Metabolife's Green Tea dietary supplement. I am hypoglycemic so I aim to eat about 80-100 grams of protein everyday. (200 g of carbs/ 50 g of fat max). So my diet is also regulated and stable. My question is: What can I do to get that fashion magazine body? I don't want to be a stick, I just want to replace my squishy body with a well-toned one. I just started my exercise regiment 2 weeks ago (taking the supplements about a week ago) and I have hardly seen a difference. I am willing to do what ever it takes to be a "head turner". Help please! moreResolved Question: How often should I do weight training per week?
I'm trying to slim down (trim fat, but add muscle) but I'm wondering how often I should do weights? I've started playing tennis and I just want to focus on doing exercises that will improve my tennis game. BASIC exercises I know to do using barbells and dumbells: SQUATS LAT PULLDOWNS (machine) BENCH PRESS LUNGES ABS DEAD ROWS (all done with active recovery, or what you may know as circuit training) Is there anything else I can do that would actually enhance my game? I know those exercises are basic but they work major groups at one time and I don't have the patience to hop from one machine to the next for an entire hour. I know it's a lot in ingest but I could use the help. I'm finally serious about my health. Thanks. moreResolved Question: How long should I do the row machine for?
So i finally just used this at the gym last night. I felt like in 10 minutes I got a better workout than I do spending 1 hour on a bike (the ones that are lower to the ground with arm rests.) It was saying that I was burning around 600 calories an hour (even though an hour would probably be impossible.) But what is the best way to use this machine for a good cardio workout ?? Like I said, I got a great exercise in only 10 minutes, and I have only used it once, so I'm a little worried about overstraining myself. moreResolved Question: So what are they saying?

Any advice is great! moreResolved Question: What is the best way for me to recover after exercise?
I work out 6 days a week, for a total of about 15 hours. I do outdoor cycling, spinning, use a rowing machine and lift weights. I also have bipolar disorder and take lithium, lamictal, and seroquel. I am 38 years old. My doctor advised me to drink Gatorade when I work out, which I have just started doing and it has helped. I eat a balanced diet, but it's strange, when I am exercising I am full of energy, but then I am pretty tired again until my next workout. I can't understand why I am feeling so tired between workouts. Any suggestions? moreResolved Question: When will I see results from using the elliptical?
I use the elliptical trainer every day at home for 20 minutes, along with a 2 minture abs workout. I go to the gym twice a week and usually use the elliptical, treadmill and rowing machine. I don't' want to lose weight, I just want to build a bit of muscle and tone my body. When will I start to see some results from this exercise routine? moreResolved Question: Cardio Exercises?
Is there any other type of cardio I can do in a gym or even at home that does not envolve using your legs. (Running, stairmster, cycling) I can only think of the rowing machine, but let me know if you have any other suggestions. moreResolved Question: Increase the intensity of my training?
I've recently found some inspiration to work harder and become bigger and stronger. I want to look for anything that may help my workouts give me better results and harder work. I weightlift 3 times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I do Bench Press, Squat, Pullups, Machine Butterflies, Glute/Ham Raise, Lat Raises, Bicep Curls, Skull Crushers, Cable Rows for rear delts, and use all the time I have left before the weight room closes and do abs. I'm ~5'9", 147lb, and turning 15 in two months. I started lifting exactly 1 year ago. I started taking amino acid (protein) pills two weeks ago and have gained 4lb since. Is there anything at all I can do to increase intensity of my workouts and produce better and faster results? I just feel like I wanna work harder and achieve more. Please don't comment my routine being too much; my dad is a doctor and teaches a course on exercise physiology and is ok my routine, and I trust him. Any suggestions will be helpful and appreciated. moreResolved Question: Exercise during pregnancy?
I am currently 25 weeks pregnant and I am becoming somewhat unhappy with my body. I am very proud of my bump, however I am not particularly happy that due to lack of exercise that my arms and my legs are no longer as toned as they once were. I used a rowing machine before I was pregnant and I am now unable to use it due to the pressure it causes on my stomach. What ways can I tone my arms and my legs which are safe and have good results? Its getting nearer to summer and I dont want to be so self conscious that I refuse to wear skirts and vests moreResolved Question: Is the rowing machine safe to use in early pregnancy?
I've been exercising on the row machine at the gym prior to pregnancy. I'm in my 5th week and wanted to know if it's still safe? moreResolved Question: Good diet ?

Im 14 and i go to the gym and run at 10.1 km per hour for 6 mins twice with a break in between. i also use the weight equipment and cycling, rowing and stepping machine. (i dont over do it though, i make sure of that) I know exercise is good foryou, but why? It's good for your heart, but it only burns about 80 calories in 1 work out session. What are other benefits? moreResolved Question: Could this be true?
..someone told me they lost just under 20 lbs in one month by eating only fruit,...(watermelon, apples, oranges, and (1) banana per day, ) Each day they included 1-2 servings of skim milk and 2 servings of nuts for protien. Exercised as well, but def. not obsessively , only when she felt like it, she would use her rowing machine for 10 or 15 minute segments, or take a walk. She is about 60 lbs overweight...(well now, only 40) (She says now, she is very slowly incorporating whole grains back into the diet, ...not a meat eater) Oh, and she does take a daily vitamin and drink plenty of water. Is losing that weight in that time possible? (not for long term) I havent been able to see her, so i dont know. Thanks She says she did this for a "jumpstart"...to her weight loss program, and its been really motivating to her. moreResolved Question: What is the best/most effective way to tone my body?
Hi, I'm a 16 year old male, I'm 6”2 and am around 172 lbs. I apologize for any ignorance I may show when posting this. I'm currently trying to find a way to tone my body to a better standard. I work out normally with a dumbbell at the weight 13kg. I have the strength and my body is slightly defined, but I would much like to improve my chest, and slightly my arms. Seeing as I already have the strength, I wasn't sure if bench pressing would be my solution. I know that that would add body mass, and I wouldn't really want to add too much. I don't mind adding mass, but I am not really looking into improving it as I think I am at a suitable one so far. I was thinking of getting a 50kg bench press, as like I said I don't want to go mad, would that a) tone my chest, arms, back, shoulders, stomach? b) would it add a lot of mass to my body? In addition, I also looked into rowing machines, as I when I looked both up, apparently a rowing machine would work those areas, would they? And if so is it good? I would prefer not to go to the gym, as I have little time to travel to ones which aren't that close, and would much prefer to buy equipment, around £100 for home use, seeing as a gym member ship can be around £30+ a month. I don't mind increasing my strength, and mass slightly, but my main motivation is to tone most or if not all of my upper body. I know jogging can be good, but I am asthmatic and with the cold weather, jogging can't always be useful when my asthma is bad.. I was thinking of taking up cycling when the days get longer, but I don't know if that would get the benefits I would hope for. But if I was to cycle I would like that to be my secondary exercise. Also, I know this sounds rather stupid, but I would like to do this without having to change the way I eat. I am not fat and I guess I eat normal, I am not a strict healthy eater but I say I generally do eat rather healthy, compared to that of a lot of people. The “look” I guess I am aiming for is clearly one which does look strong as well as defined. I don't want to be ridiculously bulky as that if far from what I want, nor do I want to be toned but rather thin. Thanks for reading that long post and thank you for those of you who reply. moreVoting Question: Bicep curls...feeling it in the elbows, but not the biceps?
Hello everyone! I started going to a gym about a month ago, and it's been going great except for one problem. Whenever I use the bicep curl machine (single weight, not separate by arm) it feels like my biceps are hardly working at all. However, by my third set I start feeling pain in my elbows, and sometimes my wrists. But again - I don't really feel anything at all in my biceps. Does this mean I'm lifting too much, or could it just be bad form? I've tried lowering the weight, and while it prevents the pain it also still feels like my biceps aren't actually being worked at all. Thanks for your help! If it helps, I do other exercises like the lat pulldown and high row, which I have been able to regularly add weight too and feel great with. It's only the curls that seem to be problematic. Edit: the machine I'm using is essentially a machine version of preacher curls, so those don't seem like a good alternative. moreResolved Question: Do you think £180 a month for gym membership & a personal trainer is good value?
Just signed up today. Wondering if its good. The gym is big and brand new. although their is no pool, which I wouldn't use in anyway, there are plenty of treadmills (8), at least 4 cross trasiners, & approx 8 exercise bikes, of 2 different kind. 3 rowing machines & some steppers. Also had loads of free weights and the machine type weights. Use of just the gym would be £20 per month. For £180 (additional £160) per month I get 2 supervised sessions a week. Involves a trainer, exercise programme, before & after photo... I live in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Gym is open 7 days a week from 8am til 9pm or thereabouts. Not sure of exact qualifications the bloke has although he was at university so deffo a professional, but its a company which is external to the actual gym, like a partnership yes, I can use the gym the whole time its open & it is really quiet. I've once seen 5 people in at the most. Its mainly a soccer place with lots of pitches in the grounds. moreResolved Question: Blistering on hands from the exercising?
I use a rowing machine 2 or 3 times a week, and often lift weights (not particularly heavy ones). I'm finding that the skin on the palms of my hands is starting to blister (just where the palm joins the fingers). Should I just ignore it and carry on? (on the assumption that the skin will harden a little of its own accord, and the problem will then stop). Or maybe I'm using the wrong grip? (although if I change my grip, it feels uncomfortable which may be a sign that it's 'wrong'). Any other suggestions? moreTop How To Exercise Using A Rowing Machine Links
