This season, the University of Illinois basketball team will likely take the phrase so often uttered by their wooly neighbors just three hours to the north, “Wait ‘Til Next Year”, to a whole new level. That’s because many Illini fans may have been saying it before this season even began. In case you hadn’t heard, 2009 is when Bruce Weber’s first crop of prize recruits since becoming the head coach of the Illini five years ago, start strolling into Chambana. Four players, guards D.J. Richardson, Brandon Paul, and Joseph Bertrand, along with forward Tyler Griffey are all ranked in the top 100 nationally and currently give the Ilini the 8th-ranked recruiting class in the nation according to Rivals.com. Throw in five-star verbal committments from small forward Jereme Richmond and shooting guard Crandall Head for 2010 and all of a sudden the Illini, who started to take on the look of a mid-major program Weber supposedly left behind, might again start to resemble the national power we were hoping “Bail” Self was going to build before bolting for the only place where the Earth’s crust is flatter and more boring to look at than Central Illinois - that being Kansas. Of course, this is all assuming that Kelvin Sampson doesn’t somehow worm his way back into college basketball and give all these guys’ fathers cushy jobs. In any event, Illinis fans still have to make it through this season. So what can be expected from a team that finished 13-18 (5-13 in the Big Ten) and lost two of its supposedly better players in bruiser Shaun Pruitt and the “Human Enigma” Brian Randle? Well, probably not a whole lot, although Thursday night’s 69-63 win at Vanderbilt, an NCAA tournament team a season ago, offers some hope. The main problem is, at least according to the hoops experts here at Grubb Hub - some of the finest in the world by the way - is that this year’s team will continue to rely heavily on seniors Trent Meacham and Chester Frazier in the backcourt, and that can’t be a good thing. Both of these guys are marginal Division I players at best. On a good team, one that might make the NCAA tournanent and have a chance to advance a round or two, Frazier would fill a backup point guard role, a guy who can come in for maybe 5-10 minutes a game and spell the starting point guard, play good defense, run the set offense, and pass the ball getting others involved. Similarly, Meacham would be a three-point specialist on a better team, the kind of role filled by Sean Harrington during three NCAA tournament runs by the Illini. Plain and simple, the more minutes these guys get, the worse off the Illini will be. Grubb Hub’s most optimistic hope coming into this season was that troubled guard Jamar Smith would come back and play like he did as a freshman, that University of Kentucky transfer Alex Legion, a 6-5 shooting guard, would be anywhere close to as good as advertised, and that freshman standout Demetri McCamey would establish himself as the clear starter at point guard and the Illini’s go-to-guy, leaving backup roles to Frazier and Meacham. With Jamar Smith out of the picture, this idealistic hope is obviously no longer possible. However, if senior guard Calvin Brock’s level of dedication really has been holding him back - as has been reported in the media - we’d like to see him play while giving 100 percent because he’s shown himself to be a fairly gifted player both offensively and defensively. All I know at this point is if Weber wants to use the games against scrub teams such as Eastern Washington and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to make a point to McCamey by leaving him out of the starting five, fine. But when the Illlini start playing real compeition, McCamey better be in there starting and playing 30-plus minutes. And Grubb Hub doesn’t give a flying rat turd who’s a senior and who’s a sophomore or whatever. All we care about is who’s better. We have given Chester Frazier all the credit in the world for being a hustler and a scrapper, but let’s face it the talent just isn’t there. And Meacham is a good catch-and-shoot guy from the beyond the arc - and that’s pretty much it. As for the frontcourt, at least the sophomore Mikes - Davis and Tisdale - have shown some real promise as well as the ability to actually make a free throw, which may or may not make them instantly better than the guys they replaced, the aforementioned Randle and Pruitt. With all the promise of seasons to come contrasted with the present, “Wait ‘Til Next Year” might prove to be pretty tough to do. moreResolved Question: Why the heck would anyone want to change college basketball's March Madness to bowl system?
that would honestly be the stupidest idea in sports ever. March Madness is more popular that all the bowl games because you get these so called Cinderella teams that are ranked like 14th beating out a #3 seed and a lot of the smaller schools get a chance to prove how good they are. I can't believe people in here actually thought that would be a good idea. All the coaches in NCAA football hate the bowl system because it is so screwed up and it never really decides who the best team in the nation is. If anything, NCAA football should develope a tournament like NCAA basketball. hey idiots, read down on the yahoo answers questions in the basketball section. research before you critisize u dumbass moreResolved Question: What years has the Penn State basketball team made the NCAA Tournament?
moreResolved Question: How many bowl games should college football have?
I saw something on ESPN.com that ranked all 34 bowl games. This brought up an interesting point to me. Thirty-four bowls? That means that 68 teams go to bowl games. There are only about 120 1-A teams. Over half the teams in D 1-A are going to bowls. Heck, only 65 teams go to the NCAA basketball tournament, and there's over 300 teams in division 1 that could go to that. I know from criticism I've seen before I'm not the only one who thinks 34 bowls are too many. It seems to cheapen going to a bowl game when mediocre teams get in so many bowls. So how many bowl games do you think there should be? For the purposes of this question, let's not get into all the problems of trying to take away bowl games from cities, which is a legitimate concern if we're going to take bowls away, but isn't what I'm really asking. Orangeblood- Well, I'd agree with that, but let's assume that the bowls aren't going anywhere for a while, because they're not. Let me rephrase that last sentence. Let's assume that the bowl system isn't going anywhere soon. A playoff system is a long way off, if we ever get it. moreResolved Question: when was the last time U-M of basketball made the NCAA Tournament?

I propse that the NCAA has a playoff tournament for college football, just like how they have it for Division II and College Basketball. There is no negative to this idea, in fact it livens up college football in my mind! Think about it: 32 teams, all with 7-5 or 6-6 records (discounting conference champions), have a tournament for the national champion. The 32 teams are divided into 4 sections, each with 8 teams: The East, The West, The Mid-America, and The North. Then we see who has can make it all the way! "simply complicated", the SEC would be included in the East Division. I don't bother making a South: "south" teams are represented in the East, and "south" teams located generally in the west are just called west teams. moreResolved Question: College Basketball vs. Pro Basketball?
Why is the NCAA basketball Tournament so exciting, and then the same players go to the Pro's and I feel we are one step away from a WWF show. The basic rules go out the window, and it's just run and shoot! Plus referee's on the take. I will stick with the NCAA. What don't I understand? moreResolved Question: Who else likes the Strength Of Schedule Factor !!?
USC (was) ranked number 1. Oregon State defeats USC. Utah defeats Oregon State. The game (loss) of Ohio State could send them further down in value, after factoring SOS. I wish those high paid experts would get the BCS rankings alive. I still think the BCS needs improvement, with some sort of tournament. Use bowl-games as the playoffs. There are nearly 30 bowl games, which allows nearly 1/2 of the 100 + NCAA (level) 1 teams to play. Geez, and we get it stuffed down faster than Thanksgiving. Why not plug them in similar to NCAA basketball . . . each game / region would draw thousands of fans with thousands of dollars . . . fan base, regional revenue and the almighty glory of victory . . . especially an upset in the Regional Finals (ie; Cotton Bowl) . . . Hit me back folks - Michael moreResolved Question: What do yall think of this idea? A NCAA Football Tournament!?
You give every Division 1-A conference a championship game, then give the conference winners an automatic bid like in college basketball. That gives you 12 teams. Then have 12 at-large bids also like college basketball and have the 24 teams play it out for the National Championship. Then the bowl games can be like NIT games. This makes it fair and teams can still be awarded for their regular season accomplishments. I know that will probably never happen in this lifetime, but what do you guys think? moreResolved Question: Why is it that the NCAA can have a huge basketball tournament?B?

I would say who it was, but I'd catch a lot of crap from people so I just don't say anything about it. I know if a small school you never heard of in basketball wins all their games they will become National Champs. Their perfect record, no matter what conference they play in, will get them into the March Madness tournament and if they keep winning they'll be Champions. ..but in football, if a small school like say UB Bulls turned in a perfect season would they be invited to play for the national title? If not, shouldn't all of them have a chance to win it all at the beginning of the year like they do in college basketball or pro sports? moreVoting Question: Is This Why Sarah Palin want do Interviews ? ?
Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home Taxpayers Also Funded Family's Travel Sarah Palin and John McCain campaign at the John Knox Village retirement community in Lee's Summit, Mo. (By Dave Kaup -- Getty Images) By James V. Grimaldi and Karl VickWashington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, September 9, 2008; Page A01 ANCHORAGE, Sept. 8 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business. The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife. Palin, who earns $125,000 a year, claimed and received $16,951 as her allowance, which officials say was permitted because her official "duty station" is Juneau, according to an analysis of her travel documents by The Washington Post. The governor's daughters and husband charged the state $43,490 to travel and many of the trips were to and from their house in Wasilla and Juneau, the capital city 600 miles away, the documents show. Gubernatorial spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Monday that Palin's expenses are not unusual and that, under state policy, the first family could have claimed per diem expenses for each child taken on official business but has not done so. Before she became the Republican Party's vice presidential nominee, Palin was little known outside Alaska. Now, with the campaign emphasizing her executive experience, her record as mayor of Wasilla, as a state oil-and-gas commissioner and as governor is receiving intense scrutiny. During her speech at the Republican National Convention last week, Palin cast herself as crusader for fiscal rectitude as Alaska's governor. She noted that she sold a state-owned plane used by the former governor. "While I was at it, I got rid of a few things in the governor's office that I didn't believe our citizens should have to pay for," she said to loud applause. Speaking from Palin's Anchorage office, Leighow said that Palin dealt with the plane and also trimmed other expenses, including foregoing a chef in the governor's mansion because she preferred to cook for her family. The first family's travel is an expected part of the job, she said. "As a matter of protocol, the governor and the first family are expected to attend community events across the state," she said. "It's absolutely reasonable that the first family participates in community events." The state finance director, Kim Garnero, said Alaska law exempts the governor's office from elaborate travel regulations. Said Leighow: "The governor is entitled to a per diem, and she claims it." The popular governor collected the per diem allowance from April 22, four days after the birth of her fifth child, until June 3, when she flew to Juneau for two days. Palin moved her family to the capital during the legislative session last year, but prefers to stay in Wasilla and drive 45 miles to Anchorage to a state office building where she conducts most of her business, aides have said. Palin rarely sought reimbursement for meals while staying in Anchorage or Wasilla, the reports show. She wrote some form of "Lodging -- own residence" or "Lodging -- Wasilla residence" more than 30 times at the same time she took a per diem, according to the reports. In two dozen undated amendments to the reports, the governor deleted the reference to staying in her home but still charged the per diem. Palin charged the state a per diem for working on Nov. 22, 2007 -- Thanksgiving Day. The reason given, according to the expense report, was the Great Alaska Shootout, an annual NCAA college basketball tournament held in Anchorage. In separate filings, the state was billed about $25,000 for Palin's daughters' expenses and $19,000 for her husband, Todd Palin. Flights topped the list for the most expensive items, and the daughter whose bill was the highest was Piper, 7, whose flights cost nearly $11,000, while Willow, 14, claimed about $6,000 and Bristol, 17, accounted for about $3,400. One event was in New York City in October 2007, when Bristol accompanied the governor to Newsweek's third annual Women and Leadership Conference, toured the New York Stock Exchange, and met local officials and business executives. The state paid for three nights in a $707-a-day hotel room. Garnero said the governor's office has the authority to approve hotel stays above $300. Asked Monday about the official policy on charging for children's travel expenses, Garnero said: "We cover the expenses of anyone who's conducting state business. I can't imagine kids could be doing that." But Leighow said many of the hundreds of invitations Palin receives include requests for her to bring her family, placing the defini moreResolved Question: Was Michael Jordan one of the greatest WINNERS in basketball history?

Only two colleges in the New England region have ever won this prestigious basketball tournament. moreResolved Question: Who are the top 2 candidates to win Rookie of the Year next year?
There are so many choices. From where I sit, I see at least 7, and my team the Portland Trailblazers have 3 of them! I'm going to be a total homer here and, of course pick 2 of our (P-town's) rookies as my top candidates. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see them supplanted by either Rose or Beasley or even any other of the candidates I have,or (haven't . . . Gallinari, Randolph?) listed. But wha'ts the fun in having a favorite team if your not a total homer, right? Fell free to write in your own selections if your a total homer too, and I didn't list your teams top draft pick selection here (Knick fans?, Warriors fans?) The candidates(listed alphebtically by last name): Jerryd Bayless - Projected by many to be the 4th best player in the 2008 NBA Draft, he sllipped all the way to 11th and taken by Indiana and traded to Portland. College quick stats - 19.7 ppg 2.7 rpg 4.0 apg. Summer League MVP - 29.8ppg. Member of the "USA Select Team" Michael Beasley - projected as a Number 1 Overall Pick in the NBA Draft for most of the college basketaball season until Derrick Rose's great NCAA Tournament run, he was taken 2nd overall by the Miami Heat. College quick stats - 26.2 ppg 12.4 rpg 1.2 apg, 28 double doubles (a freshman record). Led Orlando Summer League in scoring with 19.6 ppg. Rudy Fernandez - Portland acquired the draft rights to Rudy Fernandez from the Suns for cash in the 2007 NBA Draft. If you watched the Gold Medal game last night between USA vs. Spain, then you know this guy can ball. 2004 Copa del Rey de Baloncesto MVP; 2006 Catalan League Winner; 2006 FIBA EuroCup Winner; 2006 FIBA EuroCup Final Four MVP; Euroleague 2006-07 Rising Star Award; 2008 Catalan League Winner; 2008 Catalan League MVP; 2008 Copa del Rey de Baloncesto Winner; 2008 Copa del Rey de Baloncesto MVP; 2007-08 ULEB Cup Winner; 2007-08 ULEB Cup Final MVP Kevin Love - Taken with the 5th Overall Pick in the NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies and traded to Minnesota in a package that included O.J. Mayo. Touted as the best high school player in the country coming into the college basketball season last year. Pac-10 Freshman of the year. Final 4 participant (losing to Derrick Rose and Memphis). College quick stats - 17.5 ppg 10.6 rpg 1.9 apg. Vegas Summer League quick stats - 18 ppg 13.5 rpg 1.8 apg. Member of the "USA Select Team" O.J. College quick stats - 20.7ppg 4.5 rpg 3.3 apg (3.5 t/o . . . ouch!). Vegas Summer League quick stats – 18.8 ppg 3.6 rpb 2.6 apg. Member of the "USA Select Team" Greg Oden – Taken with the Number 1 Overall Pick by the Portland Trailblazers in the 2007 NBA Draft. Due to Oden's season ending micro-fracture knee surgery he did not play in a single NBA game last year, making him eligible for R.O.Y this season. Coming into the 2007 Draft Oden was unanimously declared a "once in a decade talent." A wrist injury kept him from playing a full season at Ohio State and he was never 100% healthy. College quick stats – 15.7 ppg 9.6 rpg 3.3 bpg. He might be a dark-horse candidate at this point, but only because he's yet to play a basketball game (in college or the NBA) at full strength and health and people tend to move on the newest and coolest thing very quickly, speaking of newest and coolest thing . . . Derrick Rose – Taken with the Number 1 Overall Pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA Draft. He is considered, unanimously, to be the best pure PG in the draft. His stock rose sharply during the NCAA tournament when he put his team on his back and carried them to a record number of wins in a season (38) and to one of the best NCAA championship games in history, but his team fell just short of the ultimate prize, losing to Kansas in that final game. College quick stats – 14.9 ppg 4.5 rpg 4.7 apg. Played only 2 games in Orlando Summer League and his stats are hardly worth posting, so I won't. So who's it going to be? Give me two. I like seeing players like Lebron James,Kobe Bryant,Chris Paul,Dwayne Wade, and Carmelo Anthony on the same team, but to me the NCAA Tournament and the 65 team field is way better, not knowing whos going to upset who and wholl survive until the next round, plus the number of brackets that get busted each year. I really want a small top ranked liberal arts college and want to stay in New England but am afraid that many of them are so far out in the boondocks. I don't want to feel trapped at college and far from city life. Princeton Review rates HC admissions selectivity at 96 so not quite as selective as the others but does it really matter at this level? Friends tell me that Holy Cross might be the best fit because it is within commuting distance of Boston and is in New England's second largest city Worcester. They also have division 1 athletics and a great basketball team that often goes to the NCAA tournament. Williams looks fantastic but just don't think I could tolerate being in such a rural area. Same for Middlebury. Amherst is not too bad in that there is the consortium of colleges there but still 2 hours from Boston. Bowdoin is in Maine and I just don't see being in Maine during New England winters! moreResolved Question: If you are in any ncaa basketball division, can you still qualify for the ncaa tournament?

I'm a pretty knowledgeable sports fan. But it's gotten to where I can't stand CBS sports. Their coverage of sports (namely the NCAA basketball tournament, NFL, or sports specials) is devoid of emotion and daring. All their announcers avoid saying anything the least bit critical of anyone, probably out of fear of alienating that team's fans. For consistency (?) I guess, they don't praise anyone lavishly, no matter how amazing their feat. The result is a boring, staid broadcast where the expected happened. Sports is about drama, about competition, about courage, about extra effort, and about both captured and squandered opportunities. CBS sports -- more than others -- is obsessed with the personalities, pomp, and trappings of wealth, fame, and athleticism. When Madden left CBS, they also lost their ability to examine things critically or to laugh. And they seem very proud of that. Shiloh, I agree CBS will struggle without Raftery. Nantz, spicy as Wonder Bread, is fine as a golf announcer but lacking for college basketball. Err, my mistake. Packer, not Raftery. moreResolved Question: How do you feel about Billy Packer not returning to do CBS Basketball?
They're going to shake up the March Madness booth next season , supposedly Clark Kellogg is going to take over Packer's spot. Packer has done NCAA tournament games with Nantz for a damn long time. He's been with him for a lot of Final Fours too. It'll be weird having him out of the booth. In addition , everyone always seemed to hate on him for some perceived bias he had which I NEVER detected. Oh well. Goodbye icon. Your thoughts on this. moreResolved Question: Fresno State, greatest cinderella story in college baseball history?
What do you guys think about this Fresno State team? Was that an amazing feat or what? First team in NCAA history with more then 23 losses to make it to the College World Series. I heard them on the radio doing a comparison to the NCAA basketball tournament. They said it was like Fresno State, a #14 seed to go on and beat a 7 seed in round 1, a 4 seed in round 2, a 1 seed in round 3, a 2 seed in round 4 and another 1 seed in the finals. How crazy is that? By the way Congrats to Fresno State on a phenominal run. moreResolved Question: Has anyone been notified if they won tickets for the 2009 NCAA Men's Basketball tournament?

Let's go back to four months ago. The college basketball season is winding down, and Michael Beasley is posting the best numbers of any freshman in a long time. He is carrying a Kansas State team to the NCAA tournament and is the consensus No. 1 pick in most NBA mock drafts. Does anyone remember that? When Beasley was playing, people saw a strong, active big man with unbelievable scoring ability. He could score with both hands, inside and outside, and he was also a fantastic rebounder. Let's rewind the tape back to a year ago now. Greg Oden and Kevin Durant, like Derrick Rose and Beasley this year, are the consensus top two picks in the draft. Durant was the super-productive big man whose team bowed out to USC early in the tournament, just like Beasley. Oden was the hyped up center with a charming personality and the appearance of someone who had played in the NBA for years. Oden helped carry his team to the NCAA finals, only to lose in the championship game, just like Derrick Rose did. When the draft came around, Oden went first and Durant went second. This year, people are ignoring Beasley's entire season's body of work and focusing more on Rose's postseason heroics. Rose was a top player all season long, but Beasley was usually considered the better prospect. There's also a major difference between Oden and Rose: Oden is a big man. The NBA has always been about building around a center in the mold of Duncan, Shaq, Hakeem, or Robinson. You have to go back to 1996 if you want to find a player below 6'8" who has been taken No. 1 overall (Allen Iverson). Since 1996, all but one player taken first has been a power forward or a center, with LeBron James being the exception. At 6'7" or 6'8", Beasley does not have the prototypical size for a power forward, but his rebounding ability, strength, and wingspan should allow him to play the position fine. He's not the best defensively, but his play on defense improved as the season went on. Rose is a great prospect. He actually reminds me of another player from that Ohio State team, Mike Conley. Rose is bigger and slightly more athletic than Conley, but Conley was a similar prospect who played better defense than Rose. Oden, Durant, and Al Horford all went ahead of Conley, whose stock only soared that high because of his postseason play. The only reason Rose is probably going to be picked first is because Beasley may have minor character issues. I think a lack of a consistent jump shot and his turnover problems for much of the season are a bigger problem. But there is one remaining factor in who should go first, and that is what team has the pick and what their needs are. The Chicago Bulls have that pick. Two years ago, the Bulls gave Kirk Hinrich a big contract to be their point guard for the foreseeable future. Then Hinrich rewarded them by having a good season offensively and being named to the second team of the all-defensive team. Hinrich is not the best playmaker in the world, but the Bulls need his defense and perimeter shooting ability. With Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Thabo Sefolosha, Chris Duhon, and Larry Hughes, the Bulls have guards with different skillsets. They are fine there. What the Bulls lack is a go-to guy. All those guards are good complimentary pieces. The same goes for Andres Nocioni, Joakim Noah, Joe Smith, Tyrus Thomas, Drew Gooden, and even Luol Deng. None of them is a go-to guy. John Paxson does not want to give up on this team he put together. On paper, there is a lot of talent there. Is Rose a transcendent enough talent to raise the others' play to a high enough level? Perhaps, but Rose needs some time to get to that level, if he ever will. Beasley's scoring ability will open things up for the entire Bulls offense. He creates mismatch problems with his inside-outside scoring ability. With Beasley being the primary scorer, Deng will be freer to take the jump to a star, and when Gordon is on the floor, that lineup is instant offense. The Bulls were a middle-of-the-road defensive team last year. Beasley probably wouldn't help that too much. The offense was the bigger problem last year, and it is quicker to fix. The Bulls still will need to figure out what to do with so many role players, but with Hinrich, Sefolosha, and Hughes on the wing and Noah inside, the Bulls have a lot of room for improvement there. By taking Derrick Rose, the Bulls will be banking that he is the next Chris Paul. But the Hornets are put together extremely well, with Tyson Chandler and David West inside, and Paul has much more scoring ability than Rose. Rose may be the hometown kid, and off the court, he offers more than Beasley does. But the game is won on the court, and just ask Rose. He will tell you that Beasley is "way better than me." moreResolved Question: Fresno in the CWS?

Next March my friends and I will converge upon Las Vegas for the 7th annual year of watching the first two rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament. The event started as a bachelor party and has since been named the __2nd Annual Bachelor Party or __2ABP and __3ABP, etc., with the __ representing the initials of the person who started the tradition. However, in the last two years, our event's founder has 1) lost the journal (by just leaving it sitting by a set of slot machines) and 2) lost his camera, which had several pictures that we trusted him to take for us. Oh, and he had several weeks to upload the pictures somewhere before he lost the camera (with the pictures). So based on his less than stellar contributions the last two years, we are considering renaming our annual retreat. Any suggestions? moreResolved Question: Should the NBA switch to single-game elimination in the PLAYOFFS?
In College Basketball, the NCAA Tournament is Best of 1. I think the NBA should switch to single-game elimination because the stakes are not as high in best of 7. If it was single-game elimination, the players would try MUCH MUCH Harder. moreResolved Question: math and probability question?
