Resolved Question: Who are the top 2 candidates to win Rookie of the Year next year?

There are so many choices. From where I sit, I see at least 7, and my team the Portland Trailblazers have 3 of them! I'm going to be a total homer here and, of course pick 2 of our (P-town's) rookies as my top candidates. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see them supplanted by either Rose or Beasley or even any other of the candidates I have,or (haven't . . . Gallinari, Randolph?) listed. But wha'ts the fun in having a favorite team if your not a total homer, right? Fell free to write in your own selections if your a total homer too, and I didn't list your teams top draft pick selection here (Knick fans?, Warriors fans?) The candidates(listed alphebtically by last name): Jerryd Bayless - Projected by many to be the 4th best player in the 2008 NBA Draft, he sllipped all the way to 11th and taken by Indiana and traded to Portland. College quick stats - 19.7 ppg 2.7 rpg 4.0 apg. Summer League MVP - 29.8ppg. Member of the "USA Select Team" Michael Beasley - projected as a Number 1 Overall Pick in the NBA Draft for most of the college basketaball season until Derrick Rose's great NCAA Tournament run, he was taken 2nd overall by the Miami Heat. College quick stats - 26.2 ppg 12.4 rpg 1.2 apg, 28 double doubles (a freshman record). Led Orlando Summer League in scoring with 19.6 ppg. Rudy Fernandez - Portland acquired the draft rights to Rudy Fernandez from the Suns for cash in the 2007 NBA Draft. If you watched the Gold Medal game last night between USA vs. Spain, then you know this guy can ball. 2004 Copa del Rey de Baloncesto MVP; 2006 Catalan League Winner; 2006 FIBA EuroCup Winner; 2006 FIBA EuroCup Final Four MVP; Euroleague 2006-07 Rising Star Award; 2008 Catalan League Winner; 2008 Catalan League MVP; 2008 Copa del Rey de Baloncesto Winner; 2008 Copa del Rey de Baloncesto MVP; 2007-08 ULEB Cup Winner; 2007-08 ULEB Cup Final MVP Kevin Love - Taken with the 5th Overall Pick in the NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies and traded to Minnesota in a package that included O.J. Mayo. Touted as the best high school player in the country coming into the college basketball season last year. Pac-10 Freshman of the year. Final 4 participant (losing to Derrick Rose and Memphis). College quick stats - 17.5 ppg 10.6 rpg 1.9 apg. Vegas Summer League quick stats - 18 ppg 13.5 rpg 1.8 apg. Member of the "USA Select Team" O.J. Mayo - Taken with the 3rd Overall Pick in the NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and traded in a package that included Kevin Love to the Memphis Grizzlies. College quick stats - 20.7ppg 4.5 rpg 3.3 apg (3.5 t/o . . . ouch!). Vegas Summer League quick stats – 18.8 ppg 3.6 rpb 2.6 apg. Member of the "USA Select Team" Greg Oden – Taken with the Number 1 Overall Pick by the Portland Trailblazers in the 2007 NBA Draft. Due to Oden's season ending micro-fracture knee surgery he did not play in a single NBA game last year, making him eligible for R.O.Y this season. Coming into the 2007 Draft Oden was unanimously declared a "once in a decade talent." A wrist injury kept him from playing a full season at Ohio State and he was never 100% healthy. College quick stats – 15.7 ppg 9.6 rpg 3.3 bpg. He might be a dark-horse candidate at this point, but only because he's yet to play a basketball game (in college or the NBA) at full strength and health and people tend to move on the newest and coolest thing very quickly, speaking of newest and coolest thing . . . Derrick Rose – Taken with the Number 1 Overall Pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA Draft. He is considered, unanimously, to be the best pure PG in the draft. His stock rose sharply during the NCAA tournament when he put his team on his back and carried them to a record number of wins in a season (38) and to one of the best NCAA championship games in history, but his team fell just short of the ultimate prize, losing to Kansas in that final game. College quick stats – 14.9 ppg 4.5 rpg 4.7 apg. Played only 2 games in Orlando Summer League and his stats are hardly worth posting, so I won't. So who's it going to be? Give me two. My picks: Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez  more

Resolved Question: Michael Beasley Should Be First Draft Pick for Chicago Bulls?

Let's go back to four months ago. The college basketball season is winding down, and Michael Beasley is posting the best numbers of any freshman in a long time. He is carrying a Kansas State team to the NCAA tournament and is the consensus No. 1 pick in most NBA mock drafts. Does anyone remember that? When Beasley was playing, people saw a strong, active big man with unbelievable scoring ability. He could score with both hands, inside and outside, and he was also a fantastic rebounder. Let's rewind the tape back to a year ago now. Greg Oden and Kevin Durant, like Derrick Rose and Beasley this year, are the consensus top two picks in the draft. Durant was the super-productive big man whose team bowed out to USC early in the tournament, just like Beasley. Oden was the hyped up center with a charming personality and the appearance of someone who had played in the NBA for years. Oden helped carry his team to the NCAA finals, only to lose in the championship game, just like Derrick Rose did. When the draft came around, Oden went first and Durant went second. This year, people are ignoring Beasley's entire season's body of work and focusing more on Rose's postseason heroics. Rose was a top player all season long, but Beasley was usually considered the better prospect. There's also a major difference between Oden and Rose: Oden is a big man. The NBA has always been about building around a center in the mold of Duncan, Shaq, Hakeem, or Robinson. You have to go back to 1996 if you want to find a player below 6'8" who has been taken No. 1 overall (Allen Iverson). Since 1996, all but one player taken first has been a power forward or a center, with LeBron James being the exception. At 6'7" or 6'8", Beasley does not have the prototypical size for a power forward, but his rebounding ability, strength, and wingspan should allow him to play the position fine. He's not the best defensively, but his play on defense improved as the season went on. Rose is a great prospect. He actually reminds me of another player from that Ohio State team, Mike Conley. Rose is bigger and slightly more athletic than Conley, but Conley was a similar prospect who played better defense than Rose. Oden, Durant, and Al Horford all went ahead of Conley, whose stock only soared that high because of his postseason play. The only reason Rose is probably going to be picked first is because Beasley may have minor character issues. I think a lack of a consistent jump shot and his turnover problems for much of the season are a bigger problem. But there is one remaining factor in who should go first, and that is what team has the pick and what their needs are. The Chicago Bulls have that pick. Two years ago, the Bulls gave Kirk Hinrich a big contract to be their point guard for the foreseeable future. Then Hinrich rewarded them by having a good season offensively and being named to the second team of the all-defensive team. Hinrich is not the best playmaker in the world, but the Bulls need his defense and perimeter shooting ability. With Hinrich, Ben Gordon, Thabo Sefolosha, Chris Duhon, and Larry Hughes, the Bulls have guards with different skillsets. They are fine there. What the Bulls lack is a go-to guy. All those guards are good complimentary pieces. The same goes for Andres Nocioni, Joakim Noah, Joe Smith, Tyrus Thomas, Drew Gooden, and even Luol Deng. None of them is a go-to guy. John Paxson does not want to give up on this team he put together. On paper, there is a lot of talent there. Is Rose a transcendent enough talent to raise the others' play to a high enough level? Perhaps, but Rose needs some time to get to that level, if he ever will. Beasley's scoring ability will open things up for the entire Bulls offense. He creates mismatch problems with his inside-outside scoring ability. With Beasley being the primary scorer, Deng will be freer to take the jump to a star, and when Gordon is on the floor, that lineup is instant offense. The Bulls were a middle-of-the-road defensive team last year. Beasley probably wouldn't help that too much. The offense was the bigger problem last year, and it is quicker to fix. The Bulls still will need to figure out what to do with so many role players, but with Hinrich, Sefolosha, and Hughes on the wing and Noah inside, the Bulls have a lot of room for improvement there. By taking Derrick Rose, the Bulls will be banking that he is the next Chris Paul. But the Hornets are put together extremely well, with Tyson Chandler and David West inside, and Paul has much more scoring ability than Rose. Rose may be the hometown kid, and off the court, he offers more than Beasley does. But the game is won on the court, and just ask Rose. He will tell you that Beasley is "way better than me."  more

That guy broke every single record at LSU.Led in scoring in the NCAA three times, averaged 44.2 PPG in 83 contests, yet current NBA fans commented that they had not heard of the name before.I guess it was that he said this "I want to be remembered as a Christian, a person that serves Him to the utmost. Resolved Question: Kobe is more clutch than Lebron. why?

13. Sports. an extremely important or crucial moment of a game: He was famous for his coolness in pitching in the clutch. 14. any critical position or situation; emergency: She kept complete control in the clutch. 16. done or accomplished in a critical situation: a clutch shot that won the basketball game. 17. dependable in crucial situations: a clutch player. The 17-foot jumper with 15 seconds left that gave the Tar Heels the 1982 NCAA championship. The hanging, double-clutch jumper over the Cleveland Cavaliers' Craig Ehlo at the buzzer. Game 6 of the 1998 Finals, with the Bulls down by three with 40 seconds left, he scored on a layup, stole the ball, and hit the winning jumper. When it comes to clutch play, Michael Jordan set the standard by which every player is measured. ut now we have two players vying for the title as most clutch. LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Both were in top form this past Sunday. LeBron returned with 9:55 to play against Chicago and the Cavaliers trailing 76-68. James scored six in a key stretch late in the game and led the Cavaliers over the Chicago Bulls, 95-86. Kobe Bryant scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter and eight in overtime to finish with 52 in Los Angeles' 108-104 victory over Dallas. They were the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month for games played in February. They are the two best players in the world. Kobe's in-season and playoff heroics date back to the 2000 NBA season. At the age of 21, he made a 15-foot jumper over Jason Kidd with 2.6 seconds left to give the Los Angeles Lakers a 97-96 victory over the Phoenix Suns. James scored 29 of Cleveland's last 30 points in a double-overtime playoff victory over the Pistons last year. He developed a killer-instinct in last year's playoffs that has carried over into this season. LeBron has led one furious 4th quarter comeback after another this year. Is it time for Kobe to move over and crown LeBron James the new "King" of clutch? 82games.com defines clutch minutes as 4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left, neither team ahead by more than 5 points. Here are LeBron's stats per 48 minutes of clutch time: GM: 36 Min: 172 +/- : +33 FGA: 37.5 FG%: .493 3pA: 12.0 3p%: .256 FTA: 24.3 FT%: 79% PTS: 59.3 Ast’d: 22% Reb: 10.1 Ast: 7.8 T/O: 3.1 Blk: 2.2 Stl: 3.6 Kobe Bryant per 48 minutes of clutch time: GM: 28 Min: 91 +/- : +7 FGA: 36.2 FG%: .493 3pA: 4.7 3p%: .333 FTA: 19.4 FT%: 81% PTS: 53.0 Ast’d: 17% Reb: 8.4 Ast: 5.2 T/O: 5.8 Blk: 1.0 Stl: 0.5 LeBron has played in 8 more clutch games than Kobe, amassing nearly twice as many minutes. Kobe is shooting a higher field goal and 3-point percentage. LeBron's free throw percentage, assists, rebounds, steals, and block averages are higher. The Lakers are 16-5 with Kobe on the floor during 4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left, neither team ahead by more than 5 points. With LeBron, the Cavs are 23-9 in the same situations. So clearly, both players are coming through in the clutch. How are James and Bryant getting it done? LeBron is shooting .493% in the clutch. 63% of his field goal attempts are jump shots, of which he is shooting .435%. 34% of his field goal attempts are considered "close shots", of which he is shooting .698%. 4% are dunks, of which he is shooting 80%. Kobe is shooting an identical .493% in the clutch. 75% of his field goal attempts are jump shots, of which he is shooting .490%. 25% of his field goal attempts are considered "close shots", of which he is shooting .588%. Kobe doesn't have a single dunk in clutch time. LeBron is better at getting to the basket for high percentage shots because of his size (6-8, 250 pounds) and athleticism. Kobe is the superior shooter. That's why I'll take Kobe Bryant. And I'm not alone. The NBA poses questions to the league's general managers before every season. One of the questions they ask is who is the most clutch player in the NBA? Here are the results over the past 5 seasons: 2002-2003 Who is the player most likely to make a last-second shot if a game depended on it? Kobe Bryant - 42.3% Reggie Miller - 38.5% Michael Jordan - 15.4% Allen Iverson - 3.8% 2003-2004 Which player in the NBA would you want taking a shot with the game on the line? Kobe Bryant - 52.4% Reggie Miller - 14.3% Tim Duncan - 9.5% 2004-2005 Which player would you want taking a shot with the game on the line? Kobe Bryant - 81.0% Tim Duncan - 4.8% Allan Houston - 4.8% Reggie Miller - 4.8% Dirk Nowitzki - 4.8% 2005-2006 Which player in the NBA would you want taking a shot with the game on the line? Kobe Bryant - 61.5% Ray Allen - 15.4% 2006-2007 Which player in the NBA would you want taking a shot with the game on the line? Kobe Bryant - 74.1% Dwyane Wade - 14.8% If I need a 4th quarter comeback against a middle-echelon defensive team incapable of keeping opposing players out of the paint, I'll take LeBron James. If I need a game winning bucket or a comeback against one of the NBA's better defensive teams, I'll take Kobe Bryant. LeBron has yet to develop a reliable outside shot and there are teams in the NBA that are capable of making him a jumpshooter. Case in point, LeBron looked like a world-beater when he single-handedly defeated the Detroit Pistons in the Conference Finals last year. James averaged 25.7 ppg and shot .449% from the field. But in the NBA Finals vs. the Spurs, he averaged 22 ppg and shot .356% from the field. Why? Because the Spurs made him a jumpshooter. I've seen Kobe hit game-winners in the NBA Finals and nail clutch playoff jumpers with Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan draped all over him. Before this season, Kobe Bryant was head and shoulders above LeBron in nearly every facet of the game. Now, a case could be made for either one as the best player in the NBA. But when it comes to clutch play, the King has a ways to go to catch up with Kobe.  more

Resolved Question: 2008 Hall of Fame class, who gets in and who doesn't?

NORTH AMERICAN COMMITTEE FINALISTS VICTOR BUBAS - Contributor (Finalist in 2003), the 1996 recipient of the prestigious John Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, began a lifelong love affair with basketball in his hometown of Gary, Indiana before attending North Carolina State University where he played for, and coached alongside, Hall of Famer Everett Case. As a player, Bubas helped NC State reach the NCAA Final Four in 1950. Bubas then landed the head coaching position at Duke University in 1959 where he led the Blue Devils to three NCAA Final Fours (1963, 1964, 1966) and four ACC championships (1960, 1963, 1964, 1966). His strong work ethic and vision helped put Duke on the national map in basketball and made Bubas the second winningest coach in the 1960s behind Hall of Famer John Wooden. As the Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference from 1976-1990, Bubas played a key role in the NCAA's adoption of the both the three-point line and the 45-second shot clock. ADRIAN DANTLEY - Player (Finalist in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007), a native of Washington, D.C., was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. He had a stellar 15-year NBA career with seven different teams (Buffalo Braves, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Maverick and Milwaukee Bucks), the majority of the time spent with the Jazz (1979-86). At all levels, Dantley enjoyed success - as a scholastic All-America player at DeMatha Catholic High School (Md.), as a collegian at Notre Dame (1973-76), as the leading scorer (19.3 ppg) of the gold medal 1976 Olympic team and as a professional where he was Rookie of the Year in 1977. His 23,177 career points still ranks 23rd all-time in the NBA. He scored 2,223 points in three seasons (25.8) at Notre Dame, ranks second in Irish career scoring and was a unanimous First Team All-America list in 1975 and 1976. In all but four seasons as a professional, Dantley averaged 20 points or better, including topping the 30-point mark four straight years (1981-84). The six-time NBA All-Star (1980-82, 1984-86) was named NBA Comeback Player of the Year in 1984, the year he led the league in scoring (30.6). Resolved Question: Duquesne make NCAAs for first time since 1979?

I'm a HS senior and a fan of Duquesne Basketball. They have been abysmal in past years but now they have great size with Kieron Achara, Shawn James and Damian Saunders. And great scoring ability at guard with Siena transfer Kojo Mensah. I think Saunders and Bill Clark, the two highly touted freshmen will turn into great players and have already helped Duquesne to this 15-7, 5-4 conference record. Can the Dukes make the NCAA Tournament without having to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament?  more

Resolved Question: Who do you think the BEST player in the NBA TODAY is?

I'm going with Allen Iverson, here's why: Iverson is the third leading scorer in NBA history. He has averaged 27.9 points per game in his career, trailing all-time leader Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain in this category by only 2.2 points per game. Iverson is one of only 30players in NBA history to score over 20,000 points in his career, and he was the 6th fastest in the history of the game to achieve this feat. Awards: Big East Rookie Of The Year - NCAA Big East Defensive Player Of The Year - NCAA (1996) NBA Rookie of the Year (1997) All-Star Rookie Game Most Valuable Player (1997) All Rookie First Team (1997) NBA Most Valuable Player (2001) NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (2001) NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (2005) 4-time NBA Scoring Champion 3-time All NBA First Team Selection 3-time All NBA Second Team Selection 3-time NBA Steals Champion 8-time NBA All-Star Team USA Basketball Captain (2004) Widely considered the best under 6ft. player of all time. In just two years he became the Hoya's all time leading scorer. John Thompson on AI, "What people don't understand about Allen, is as much as an offensive threat he is, he's even better defensively, he's one of the best players I've ever coached defensively." Single-handedly lead the Sixers to the Finals without a star teammate. (Kobe has yet to lead his team out of the first round without one.) So I think it's AI. Resolved Question: NCAA Football - who wins and by what score - Pittsburgh @ Louisville?

FYI - Once the game "starts" with kick-off I will take a tally of who answered and scores provided. I monitor who answered by kick off and write down the original scores by the way – I want to keep this fun and honest for all who answer these. Additionally, if two people on the winning team have the same score I will then use the criteria of who came closest with the score on the losing team. If that leads to a tie then I will have to choose the person who chose the score first. Pitt will beat Louisville final score 32 - 10. Both Louisville and Kentucky should stick to Basketball - the ratings on these schools have been wayyyyy to kind. Best of Luck!  more

Geographic Region: Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky / East Chicago, Indiana Brock, James "Jim" James Brock was the second head basketball coach at William Grant High School (WGHS) in Covington, Kentucky, coaching there from 1955 to 1965. Like other African American school teams in Kentucky, WGHS was a member of the Kentucky High School Athletic League (KHSAL). The counter league, Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA), was for whites only until school integration began in the mid-1950s. The 1956-1957 WGHS team was the first African American basketball team to win a district tournament in the KHSAA tournament. As more African American students were allowed to attend the formerly all white schools, there was an impact on the pool of high school athletes that had been restricted to the all black schools. In 1965, the year that William Grant High School was closed, the basketball team won only five games. The season was a far cry from the winning seasons that had garnered the school a win-loss record of 185-69 during Brock's years as head coach. With the closing of William Grant, Brock moved on to Cincinnati, where he continued to successfully coach high school sports. James Brock was inducted into the Northern Kentucky Black Hall of Fame and the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2000. For more see Shadows of the past, by L. Football is my favorite sport. It turned my life around in a good way. Making me a more focused person. If it wasn't for the sport I be either locked up(in jail) or even worse. I know to become a great player it takes a long time like months and years to develop the skills. I didn't ever had the chance like that at the time. I wanted to play football since I was 10. I didn't play any pee wee or middle school sports(football) because my mother didn't want take the chance of me to getting hurt or injured. I started out on my own playing for high school as a freshman for White Station High School. East High School was my home school but my mother didn’t want me to attend there cause of the violence and school crime. As my first year ever playing and try to know anything about the sport so I came to every practice. I didn’t know what position I was going for but for always attending practice I made the team. Cause of my size(5’9 150lbs) my coach put me at linebacker. After spending the entire season being on special teams in JV and being on the bench on Varsity, we went 3-7. After the season was over, I spent rest of the school year training with the team off-season. As I planning on having a better season as a sophomore cause I was tips away from getting promoted to Varsity (special teams). As soon as school started I got put out the school (not for anything bad) because the school was so overpopulated that they had to send some students to other schools. Cause of that I had no choice but to transfer to East High School (my neighborhood school). After I enrolled immediately tried try out for the football team but the coach didn’t let me on the team because he told the season already started, I was too late, and told me to wait until the season was over. I spent my entire sophomore season lifting weights and playing street football and basketball with my friends. I was downed letting my sophomore season go to waste. As soon as the season ended, I went to every practice in the off-season. Because of my performance in the weight room, I got on the coaches good side. As I train all off-season with the team and expecting mediocre season as a junior at either at East High School or back at White Station High School. Later on my mother left my step-dad for another person. So she moved to a different neighborhood. Since I was in a different neighborhood she enrolled me to a different School which was Raleigh Egypt high school. After that the football coach didn’t want me to play on the team because he thought I was not eligible to play by the TSSAA rule(Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association) in which I was but it was to difficult to find out. So again I missed my whole junior season over that. I weight trained the whole season so I can have a nice senior season (at least). As soon as that season ended my mom found out that her boyfriend was no good, moved back to our original house, and got back together with my step-dad. Since I moved in my original neighborhood (back in the East high school district) and got tired driving miles to the other school (Raleigh Egypt High School) which was far so in the end of the semester I enrolled back in East High School. My mother tried to get me back in White Station(which is a top-notch, overpopulated, optional school). I wouldn’t mind going there but I knew that they wasn’t going to let me attend because school population and not being in the school district. So I planned to continue to play for East for my senior season. I came to every off-season practice that was held. I even was even on the track and field team just to make up from my sophomore and junior season. As I plan to play and even start at linebacker there was a few problems. As of being on an elite football team(East High School) that make it to the playoffs every season, the defensive coach relied on more experienced and skilled people and since we didn’t have enough linemen (big people) cause of my size(5’11,180lbs) and strength the head coach putted me at defensive end and offensive guard. I had disadvantages of playing the position while being out experienced and outsized. So I spent my senior season playing on special teams(which was field goal block and kick-off return) its experience getting in but it was very little because they were blowing teams out with scores like 20-0,28-0,60-0,50-0,24-0 which leading me getting in once or twice a game. It a great experience for a second year player I say. We didn’t win state or anything but we had a great season(10-2). As the season was over, I was still training and planning on playing for a college team. In my spare time I had a part-time job to get some money in my pocket and I was on the track and field team again. I graduated with the class of 2006. As I planning on attending college in the fall of 2006, I join the US Army Reserve for college money and military experience. I couldn’t attend school because they sent me straight to Basic training and AIT in October 2006. Later on I graduated in February 2007. Every since I joined I been in Germany for one month. I’m 20 yrs old now. I’m planning on attending college this fall. I’m also planning on walking on a Div-IAA team since I have the Montgomery GI bill. I’ve just qualified for the NCAA Clearinghouse. The position I’m going for is safety SS/FS. I feel that’s a great position for me because of my size. Now I’m about 6'0 tall and weight about 203. I’m just need a 3-day workout plan(strength, speed, agility, size and endurance) and any strategy tips on this position. I said 3 days because of right now I working 3 jobs. I’m full-time mechanic, a part-time waiter, and a part-time soldier that might be full-time if you know what I mean. So I need serious help on training to get me better at the position.  more
