Basketball Hoop Parts Questions asked

Resolved Question: did i lose my baby? ?

i was playing basketball. i was just running around and shooting some hoops. i started noticing a little bit of cramping. when i got home i saw blood in my panties and on the pad. i looked in the toliet and saw a big clot. size of quater maybe or a little smaller. i should be 8 weeks and some days. the clot was dark red and i saw clear mucus in it, and tiny little red clots in it. a part of the clot was like black or dark red. it was long and it looked like it was part of my lining of my uterus or something. i am still getting a period but its different. lighter, mild cramps, not bleeding heavily. can anyone help me out? im not going to the ER! im going to let god handle it. i see my doc on the 13th of nov. thats the closes spot they have open for me. it did not last long. i did not have horrible strong cramps. ive had a miscarriage before! the blood was bright red, but kind of dark bright red. just slight cramping and i hope if there is something inside, im stopping. i even stopped working out and i got off my diet! so i do have a heart  more

Resolved Question: How do we get this ordinance enforced when the city refuses to do their job?

What can we do about the city ignoring us? We've been complaining about a basketball hoop that's in the street in front of our neighbors house. It has turned the street into a public court. There has been drugs, screaming, profanity, multiple balls pounding at all hours, motorists intimidated, cars dented, glass, and graffiti in the street. The city had to come out and clean the street. The city has a hotline where you can report ordinances that are being violated. There are three violations, an obstruction in the street, playing in the street, and noise. An inspector told me there was a three step process to getting the hoop removed, and that these things are a real problem in all parts of the city. The first step is a certified letter, the second step is a citation, and the third step is confiscation. The people who rent that house would take the hoop down when inspection was due, and the city would close the case. We'd reopen it, and the cycle would repeat. We told the inspector what the people we're doing. After begging him, he agreed we could tell him when it was up and he'd come over and cite it. He never does. I've called him repeatedly. Finally my husband called, and he told him they couldn't write citations and he never told me that. He said he'd come out and put up a notice since we said it was up, but he didn't. We've left a message for his supervisor, who won't call us back. We're good citizens who just want to live a half way peaceful life. My husband is even a cop who risks his life every day for public safety, but we can't get any help on enforcing an ordinance. He is not a cop in this area, so doesn't know any of the local cops. What can we do?  more

Resolved Question: DO you understand this story? Please read it and give me some feedback!! ?

“I was never like this before. If I had only stuck to school and focused on math, maybe I would’ve actually had a chance to survive on the ghetto streets of South Africa. I could’ve been an accountant. I could’ve found a good job and earned the money to move from the streets and into a good neighborhood. I could’ve done many things with my life, but I never. I chose not to.” The bell had rung an hour ago. Sukh was late. Again . Over the past few days his mother would be out all night and would come home when he was getting ready to go to school. She’d collapse on the cheap and ragged sofa; her face would be moist and dripping with sweat. Sometimes she’d have bruises all over her body, other times she would be lucky and come home without a scratch. She’d pull out a ten dollar bill from her skimpy purse, and place it into Sukh’s pocket, as he would sit beside her on the floor wishing there was something he could do to help her. But no matter how hard Sukh had tried to persuade her into getting off the streets, she wouldn’t listen. The only reply he ever got back was a weak and hopeless smile. “ Sukh, you have been late for the third time this week!”, Mr.Chike said. He handed a pink slip to Sukh with a stern look on his face. “You’re a very well student and if you keep up like this, your overall percentage will soar down in no time. Take a seat.” “Yes, sir”, Sukh said avoiding eye contact. He took a seat next to the window and examined the class. It was emptier than usual today. At the most, there would be 15 students present, but today there were only 10. Most of the students either ditched class or couldn’t afford it. Some were even part of violent gangs. And others didn’t think education could get them away from the ghetto so they just decided not to show up. “All right class, so you will each be assigned to –.” Sukh dazed off, wandering about how his mother was holding up without him. Ever since she first told Sukh about how she had caught AIDS all he wanted to do was be by her side. But she would never allow that. Five years have passed since Sukh’s older brother had run away and from that day on Sukh’s mother had gotten very strict about education. “As time flew by at school I didn’t learn a thing. It kept up like that for days, and the days turned into weeks. And then months. My mind was drifting apart into a time when everything was perfect. When my family was actually a real and happy family.Although I knew it would never be the same, it made me feel better to know that there was once a time in my life that wasn’t as horrid as it was then.” As everyone was dismissed from school Sukh would go to a place where nothing could get into his way. The basketball court. He wasn’t the greatest player in his school, in fact he wasn’t even close to that, but he would always fantasize about being in the NBA. Knowing how easily you can get a girl by being famous made Sukh strive to do anything to be a better player. But it wasn’t only because he wanted to be chased by girls all day long,it was because he loved basketball. He lived for it. “He shoots and he scores!” Gamba said as he walked toward Sukh. Gamba was Sukh’s best friend and they’d always meet at the court after school for a game or two. “Yo,What’s up?” Sukh chest passed the ball to Gamba. “Not much man.” Gamba caught the ball and aimed for the hoop. He missed. “You?” “Same shit ,I guess.” Sukh ran towards the hoop to get the rebound shot. “Have you heard bout the new b-ball team? Their looking for players. ” Gamba wiped the sweat off his forehead. The sun was beaming. “For real? Since when?” Sukh bounced the basketball a couple of times, looking directly at Gamba. Gamba chugged what was left in his water bottle. “Since ever man. You should join, but they charge a lot.” “Naw,I’m broke.I ain’t got no change in my pockets.” He quickly looked away, trying to hide the disappointment in his eyes. “Listen Sukh.” Gamba lowered his voice. “I know a couple of guys. They play fair. You do something fo them, they do something fo you. It’s simple. You in?” “At the time, although I was only 14, I knew exactly what Gamba was talking about. And I also knew it wasn’t the right thing to do. But as a little kid my favorite show was sports connection and it was there where I wanted to be. I wanted to be one of those hip looking basketball players who wore expensive jerseys and roamed the courts with their grand skills. I wanted to be on TV; I wanted to be out there! And without some sort of experience I also knew there was no way of reaching that place I had so often dreamed about. So I agreed.” “I’m all in, Gamba.” Sukh aimed for the hoop. The ball rolled on the rim and swooshed in. Its not finished yet!  more

Resolved Question: Seeking words of wisdom for stalking problem......?

Part of my daily routine is to play basketball for about 2 hours. I enjoy my privacy while dribbling and shooting hoops. It's basically my stress reliever. However, recently, I have noticed some changes in my comfortable environment. There is an emo guy named Ian who has been watching me play basketball from his yard two houses away. I never wear anything too revealing but he just sits there and stares. I just want my privacy while playing basketball if it's not too much to ask. He also walks by my house sometimes. I have a shy nature and would never have the guts to confront him. I've been stalked before but I handled the issue horribley. All I want is some privacy. Any advice? BTW, I wouldn't be comfortable dating him because he's not the type of guy I'm into and I heard he's trouble.  more

Resolved Question: My six year old son is too impatient with himself. How do I get him to lighten up and keep trying?

My little guy has been a perfectionist from day one. It doesn't matter if he is learning to cut with scissors, write his name, swim or whatever, he tries once and if doesn't have instant success- he just quits. Yesterday he went to his first day of Basketball camp for upcoming first graders. He was real quick to notice that there were kids there who already had most of the skills. (He's very sharp - he reads at the 3rd grade level independently.) When they dribbled around the chairs he lost the ball on the second chair so he went to the wall and stood there alone. When they did ball handling drills he just stood there with his hands to his side, pouting. He didn't even try it. When they shot hoops, he didn't make the basket the first time so he wouldn't use his second and third try. He did however get in line for the next shot. He was very successful with the passing and catching so he participated fully in this part! His dad and I have and still are helping him with basketball.  more

Resolved Question: 5 reasons the Lakers will win the championship in 2009?

The Lakers will win the NBA Championship next year because: <!--[if !supportLists]-->1. <!--[endif]-->Andrew Bynum will be healthy (at least we hope). Bynum averaged 13 points, 10 boards, and two blocks a game while playing only 28 minutes per contest last season. He shot 64 percent from the field and was a steady big man in the middle for the Lakers not only offensively, but also in the otherwise weak L.A. defensive interior. He provided many of the Lakers' defenders a last resort in the paint if their man got by them. He’s young, he’s tough, and he has shown he can bulk up and be the player that Kobe Bryant wants playing alongside him—as evidenced by his emergence early on this season. <!--[if !supportLists]-->2. <!--[endif]-->Kobe Bryant will be hungrier than ever to win another NBA Championship. Not many players can say they have won three world championships. At the same time, not many can say they’ve lost two in a row, either. Kobe Bryant is the utmost competitor, and you can be sure that he will be working hard all summer to make it back to the Finals. It’ll start with the Olympics, and I’m sure it will end with countless hours spent in the gym pumping iron while his pinky recovers from the inevitable surgery that will need to be performed. Jackson will continue to harp to Kobe the importance of team basketball (which evaporated from his mind during the Finals) and the need to develop young players. Expect Kobe to take fewer shots next season in favor of more assists, more rebounds and better defense. He’s won the scoring title without Shaq, he has won the MVP of the regular season without Shaq, and he will be wholeheartedly determined to win that elusive title without Shaq next season. <!--[if !supportLists]-->3. Pau Ga-soft and Lamar O-Dumb will come into the season bigger and more focused. There’s no doubt in any of our minds that these two players have the talent and the potential to be superstars in this league. In Pau’s case, he rolled through the playoffs in the West without many roadblocks, but encountered a much too physical, energetic, and determined Kevin Garnett in the Finals. In the early stages of Game Six, Pau’s main drawback was brought front-and-center when he was nonchalantly tossed to the ground by a quick, physical move from Kevin Garnett. If the Lakers are going to win a championship against a team like the Celtics next season, Pau Gasol will need to hit the gym harder than he ever has this summer (and this will be hard because he will be playing for Spain in the Olympics), work with Kareem (Lakers Special Assistant Coach for big men) on his positioning and toughness on the block, and improve his soft defense. In Lamar’s case, the man just needs to be more focused and keep his head in the game for 48 minutes. Stupid fouls on the defensive side, overambitious drives to the hoop that result in offensive fouls on the other end, and just the general stupor that he usually finds himself in during big games hurts the Lakers. Lamar needs to mature (and something tells me after this year’s Finals he will) and needs to understand exactly what the Lakers need from him—a focused intensity mirroring that of Kevin Garnett’s. <!--[if !supportLists]-->4. The Laker bench will improve with this experience. Without the emergence of Sasha Vujacic, Jordan Farmar, and Ronnie Turiaf during different parts of the season and playoffs for the Lakers, L.A. probably wouldn’t have earned the No. 1 seed in the West. I believe the confidence and experience that many of the young players on the bench have collected will help them going into next season. Sasha should continue to improve his defense so that he can stay with the leagues premier shooting guards (Allen just clowned him last game). Jordan should look to add a little muscle and improve his jump shot (especially his three). And Ronnie should continue working on his low-post defense and mid-range jump shot. <!--[if !supportLists]-->5. <!--[endif]-->The Lakers will improve their defense. Lets be honest, the Lakers had no real trouble scoring against any team this year, besides the Boston Celtics. What they did have trouble with at times was team defense. We all know Kobe has been an All-NBA First Team defender and that Lamar is a crafty defender as well, but the Lakers have really struggled with their spacing on defense. Routinely during the Finals, a player would get beat and nobody would be at home in the middle to help. I think Phil Jackson and his entire coaching staff will begin to preach defense more and more this summer. It will help enormously if Bynum can come back from his knee injuries and solidify the center of the defense like he did early on in the 2007-08 season.  more

Resolved Question: ~ Help with finding a movie.?

I only remember parts of the movie. I be leave it's from the 80's The main character has an eye patch on. He is sent to an island that "criminals" are sent. I only remember a few parts of the movie, for example before going to the island, there is a section were folks can choose to electrocute themselves instead of going ... When on the island there was a group of folks who was praying, but gotten mowed down by a gunman ... The main character was captured and forced to play basketball ( shooting hoops in a certain amount of time ) for his life inside of some kind of stadium .... The main character eventually met up with a female and was talking about "green backs" and "blue backs" ( money ) ... in the end the main character punched in a code in a remote control, which shut down the world .... the very last scene, it's dark out, he reaches down picks up a pack of cigs, and lights one ... any one knows which movie this is? Sorry if I can only remember a couple bits of it.  more

Resolved Question: Child broke arm at day care, is this considered negligence?

My 7 year old broke her arm by climbing up about 3 feet from the ground on a basketball hoop sort of toy, on a concrete playground and falling backward. I asked her if she was breaking the rules and she said that they are allowed to climb on that one, just not the bigger one. Is this considered negligence on the day care's part? Can I sue them? We live in WA.... Funny responses, thanks. Are any of you lawyers? I wouldn't really sue, it would go against my ethics since I believe the safety police have turned our citizens into a bunch of sniveling pansies, more rhetorical than anything.... you say "It wasn't put there for climbing". Then why were they allowed to climb on it?  more

I'm not really popular. I'm new to this school. I like bball, but if you took one look at me you'd never think that. My gym class is full of really pretty girls, but they can't play to save their life. I was shooting hoops, all of a sudden I realized my ball didn't come back! I scanned the gym and realized Dan, the most popular guy, basketball, football, and lax player, took my ball. And was smiling. That got ruined from some girl yelling his name. We've been talking since. He's the one that makes an effort. He was surprised when I was listening to 2pac, we exchange sarcastic comments, he's just a lot of fun. His foot was under my desk and I was rubbing my foot against his. I thought it was part of the desk! And he didn't move it. He also took a bball hoop from the classroom door and placed it on my head! Haha. But then I have to stop and remember that ...I have no chance and to get my head out of the clouds. But I want him. So bad. How can I get 'em? Thanks. <3  more

Resolved Question: What is the name of that song?

I was about to leave school when I heard saw the song. It was a music video my brother had burned onto a cd just for fun and in the video there were people around a basketball court I think and at one point a guy sat on a basketball hoop (or went through it). I remember only like a very small part of the song and I think it went like this, "Why do you keep my heart waiting?" and I think it repeats that part two times. If it helps, it was a rock song and the drum beats were on every off beat I think. Help?  more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my college essay?

A buzzer sounds; temporarily drowning out the yells of the spectators packed into the brilliantly lit gymnasium. At this stage in the game, a buzzer signifies the entrance of a new player onto the court. The ref waves me in, and I jog over to the player I’ll be defending; feeling energized by the brief rest on the bench. The clock is ticking down on the fourth quarter. It’s crucial that we make a stop here to cement our hard-earned lead. I turn my attention to the opposing team, which rapidly bears down on us and begins to pass around the perimeter. Their leading scorer suddenly brakes towards the middle, leaving his man caught in a pick a few feet behind. He catches the ball and turns to shoot: he misses, the ball bounces towards me. Instinctively, I lurch towards it. My mind blocks out everything else—the players behind me, the crowd, the cheering student section—and focuses only on what lies in front of me. I begin to dribble up the court and spot our point guard dashing out in front of me with his defender hot on his heels. Without losing a stride, I pick up my dribble and fling the ball in front of my teammate. Another half-second brings us to a new scenario. Our point guard has brought the ball near the basket but has been cut off by his defender: I realize what is going to happen next. My feet leave the ground as my teammate lobs the ball near the basket. Everything feels so natural; my movements are the result of hours of practice and training. I grab the ball and slam it through the hoop. Basketball has been a major part of my life for over ten years, and has shaped both my character and outlook in radical ways. One of the first things I learned from basketball was the importance of team work. Even as a little child just beginning to play, I, along with all my teammates, quickly grasped that working together was the only way to achieve success. My early AAU team became a family; we supported each other on and off the court. The friendships that were built playing basketball remain some of the strongest in my life. As I grew older and started playing on my seventh grade school team, basketball began to shape me in other ways. I learned the importance of willpower; how to control myself both mentally and physically in order to achieve my goals. I learned how to lead others, and how to learn from other’s examples. Basketball has taught me perseverance, focus, patience, humility, pride, loyalty, and resolve. While I will not play varsity basketball in college, the effect it has had on me will profoundly impact every aspect of my life. One thing is for sure, I would not be the person I am without it.  more

Resolved Question: Why are some NBA players so bad at free throws?

I really don't understand why. If an NBA player is so bad at shooting free throws, wouldn't you think they would park their @$$ at the line in practice and keep shooting them til they get better? It is the NBA! The highest level of basketball there is and some guys can't put the ball in the hoop from 15 feet away with nobody defending them! I can maybe undertand someone being bad at them for their first couple of years, but I don't see why hard work can't make them improve. Take Ben Wallace for example, how has this guy gotten WORSE over the years at free throws? Last year he was down around 40%! I shot a higher percentage from the line when I was in elementary school! I realize that free throws are only a small part of basketball, and if they are bad free throw shooters they are great at other stuff. But still I see no reason why NBA players should be so bad. Ok I am done with my rant. If anyone can attempt to answer my questions I will be very happy.  more

Resolved Question: Should I tell off a minister or stick it out?

We live next door to a church. They have put up a basketball hoop that is about 20 feet from our driveway, which makes the basketball court part of their parking lot and an alley. Because of this hoop there are days where we can't get in our driveway because there are people everywhere. Then when you back out of the driveway you have to worry about hitting someone. Oh yes, then there are the times when the basketball is bouncing off our cars from the rebound. The whole location of the hoop presents such an unsafe situation. The other problem is the type of people that are coming down here to play. There is a group of guys who are messing with our property everytime that they are down here. They leave their trash all over the place and they are constantly over at our house using our hose hookup to get water. I have tried talking to the church but they are very unreasonable. What should I do? Can I point out to city council the safety issues?  more

Resolved Question: Can performance enhancing drugs help in the NBA?

I think that the NBA (with soccer a close 2nd) is the best sport because it demonstrates the most athletic skill. Part of this is because I feel like basketball and soccer really wouldn't benefit from performance enhancing drugs. I've been trying to figure out how steroids or EPO could SIGNIFICANTLY help a basketball (or soccer) player for their sport. Yeah they would be stronger or have better endurance but after awhile (maybe a year???) those drugs will wear out one's body (e.g. joints) and ruin one's career. And even still you need to be good and shooting hoops (scoring goals), passing, defense and/or rebounding. Am I wrong? and Are there performance enhancing drugs that could benefit someone definitively in the NBA or Soccer? Plz list resources. PS: I'm not talking about weed, alcohol or cocaine in regards to performance enhancing drugs.  more

Resolved Question: Help!! **NASTY** neighbor. Any ideas for an inexpensive fence? I can put up something as high as 6'?

This goes beyond the normal nastiness on their part. 5 kids next door think they are entitled to use my property, and the parents say it's my fault for buying the house- since I knew they had kids. ??? These are NOT postage stamp size lots. (over 1/3 acre each) The last straw was a basketball hoop they knowingly put on my property. I had the property staked, but it's time for a fence. Resolved Question: What you think of this Prince article?

John Nelson turns sixty-nine today, and all the semiretired piano man wants for his birthday is to shoot some pool with his firstborn son. "He's real handy with a cue," says Prince, laughing, as he threads his old white T-bird through his old black neighborhood toward his old man's house. "He's so cool. The old man knows what time it is." Hard time is how life has traditionally been clocked in North Minneapolis; this is the place 'Time' forgot twelve years ago when the magazine's cover trumpeted "The Good Life in Minnesota," alongside a picture of Governor Wendell Anderson holding up a walleye. Though tame and middle-class by Watts and Roxbury standards, the North Side offers some of the few mean streets in town. The old sights bring out more Babbitt than Badass is Prince as he leads a leisurely tour down the main streets of his inner-city Gopher Prairie. He cruises slowly, respectfully: stopping completely at red lights, flicking on his turn signal even when no one's at an intersection. Gone is the wary Kung Fu Grasshopper voice with which Prince whispers when meeting strangers or accepting Academy Awards. Cruising peacefully with the window down, he's proof in a paisley jump suit that you can always go home again, especially if you never really left town. Tooling through the neighborhood, Prince speaks matter-of-factly of why he toyed with early interviewers about his father and mother, their divorce and his adolescent wanderings between the homes of his parents, friends and relatives. "I used to tease a lot of journalists early on," he says, "because I wanted them to concentrate on the music and not so much on me coming from a broken home. I really didn't think that was important. What was important was what came out of my system that particular day. I don't live in the past. I don't play my old records for that reason. I make a statement, then move on to the next." The early facts, for the neo-Freudians: John Nelson, leader of the Prince Rogers jazz trio, knew Mattie Shaw from North Side community dances. A singer sixteen years John's junior, Mattie bore traces of Billie Holiday in her pipes and more than a trace of Indian and Caucasian in her blood. She joined the Prince Rogers trio, sang for a few years around town, married John Nelson and dropped out of the group. She nicknamed her husband after the band; the son who came in 1958 got the nickname on his birth certificate. At home and on the street, the kid was "Skipper." Mattie and John broke up ten years later, and Prince began his domestic shuttle. "That's where my mom lives," he says nonchalantly, nodding toward a neatly trimmed house and lawn. "My parents live very close by each other, but they don't talk. My mom's the wild side of me; she's like that all the time. My dad's real serene; it takes the music to get him going. My father and me, we're one and the same." A wry laugh. "He's a little sick, just like I am." "That was the church I went to growing up," says Prince. "I wonder who's getting married." A fat little kid waves, and Prince waves back. "Just all kinds of things here," he goes on, turning right. "There was a school right there, John Hay. That's where I went to elementary school," he says, pointing out a field of black tar sprouting a handful of bent metal basketball rims. "And that's where my cousin lives. I used to play there every day when I was twelve, on these streets, football up and down this block. That's his father out there on the lawn." These lawns are where Prince the adolescent would also amuse his friends with expert Prince is fiddling with the tape deck inside the T-Bird. On low volume comes his unreleased "Old Friends 4 Sale," an arrow-to-the-heart rock ballad about trust and loss. Unlike "Positively 4th Street" -- which Bob Dylan reputedly named after a nearby Minneapolis block -- the lyrics are sad, not bitter. "I don't know too much about Dylan," says Prince, "but I respect him a lot. 'All Along the Watchtower' is my favorite of his. I heard it first from Jimi Hendrix." He turns onto Plymouth, the North Side's main strip. When Martin Luther King got shot, it was Plymouth Avenue that burned. "We used to go to that McDonald's there," he says. "I didn't have any money, so I'd just stand outside there and smell stuff. Poverty makes people angry, brings out their worst side. I was very bitter when I was young. I was insecure and I'd attack anybody. I couldn't keep a girlfriend for two weeks. We'd argue about anything." Across the street from McDonald's, Prince spies a smaller landmark. He points to a vacant corner phone booth and remembers a teenage fight with a strict and unforgiving father. "That's where I called my dad and begged him to take me back after he kicked me out," he begins softly. "He said no, so I called my sister and asked her to ask him. So she did, and afterward told me that all I had to do was call him back, tell him I was sorry, and he's take me back. So I did, and he still said no. I sat crying at that phone booth for two hours. That's the last time I cried. In the years between that phone-booth breakdown and today's pool game came forgiveness. Says Prince, "Once I made it, got my first record contract, got my name on a piece of paper and a little money in my pocket, I was able to forgive. Once I was eating every day, I became a much nicer person." But it took many more years for the son to understand what a jazzman father needed to survive. Prince figured it out when he moved into his purple house. "I can be upstairs at the piano, and Rande [his cook] can come in," he says. "Her footsteps will be in a different time, and it's real weird when you hear something that's a totally different rhythm than what you're playing. A lot of times that's mistaken for conceit or not having a heart. But it's not. And my dad's the same way, and that's why it was hard for him to live with anybody. I didn't realize that until recently. When he was working or thinking, he had a private pulse going constantly inside him. I don't know, your bloodstream beats differently." Prince pulls the T-Bird into an alley behind a street of neat frame houses, stops behind a wooden one-car garage and rolls down the window. Relaxing against a tree is a man who looks like Cab Calloway. Dressed in a crisp white suit, collar and tie, a trim and smiling John Nelson adjusts his best cuff links and waves. "Happy birthday," says the son. "Thanks," says the father, laughing. Nelson says he's not even allowing himself a piece of cake on his birthday. "No, not this year," he says with a shake of the head. Pointing at his son, Nelson continues, "I'm trying to take off ten pounds I put on while visiting him in Los Angeles. He eats like I want to eat, but exercises, which I certainly don't." Father then asks son if maybe he should drive himself to the pool game so he won't have to be hauled all the way back afterward. Prince says okay, and Nelson, chuckling, says to the stranger, "Hey, let me show you what I got for my birthday two years ago." He goes over to the garage and gives a tug on the door handle. is a An "That. "We used parts of my past and present to make the story pop more, but it was a story. My dad wouldn't have nothing to do with guns. He never swore, still doesn't, and never drinks." Prince looks in his rearview mirror at the car tailing him. "He don't look sixty-nine, do he? He's so cool. He's got girlfriends, lots of 'em." Prince drives alongside two black kids walking their bikes. "Hey, Prince," says one casually. "Hey," says the driver with a nod, "how you doing?" Passing by old neighbors watering their lawns and shooting hoops, the North Side's favorite son talks about his hometown. "I wouldn't move, just cuz I like it here so much. I can go out and not get jumped on. It feels good not to be hassled when I dance, which I do a lot. It's not a think of everybody saying, 'Whoa, who's out with who here?' while photographers flash their bulbs in your face." Nearing the turnoff that leads from Minneapolis to suburban Eden Prairie, Prince flips in another tape and peeks in the rearview mirror. John Nelson is still right behind. "It's real hard for my father to show emotion," says Prince, heading onto the highway. "He never says, 'I love you,' and when we hug or something, we bang our heads together like in some Charlie Chaplin movie. But a while ago, he was telling me how I always had to be careful. My father told me, 'If anything happens to you, I'm gone.' All I thought at first was that it was a real nice thing to say. But then I thought about it for a while and realized something. That was my father's way of saying 'I love you.'" A few minutes later, Prince and his father pull in front of the Warehouse, a concrete barn in an Eden Prairie industrial park. Inside, the Family, a rock-funk band that Prince has been working with, is pounding out new songs and dance routines. The group is as tight as ace drummer Jellybean Johnson's pants. At the end of one hot number, Family members fall on their backs, twitching like fried eggs. Prince and his father enter to hellos from the still-gyrating band. Prince goes over to a pool table by the soundboard, racks the balls and shimmies to the beat of the Family's next song. Taking everything in, John Nelson gives a professional nod to the band, his son's rack job and his own just-chalked cue. He hitches his shoulders, takes aim and breaks like Minnesota Fats. A few minutes later, the band is still playing and the father is still shooting. Prince, son to this father and father to this band, is smiling. THE NIGHT BEFORE, in the Warehouse, Prince is about to break his three-year public silence. Wearing a jump suit, powder-blue boots and a little crucifix on a chain, he dances with the Family for a little while, plays guitar for a minute, sings lead for a second, then noodles four-handed keyboard with Susannah Melvoin, Wendy's identical-twin sister. Seeing me at the door, Prince comes over. "Hi," he whispers, offering a hand, "want something to eat or drink?" On the table in front of the band are piles of fruit and a couple bags of Doritos. Six different kinds of tea sit on a shelf by the wall. No drugs, no booze, no coffee. Prince plays another lick or two and watches for a few more minutes, then waves goodbye to the band and heads for his car outside the concrete barn. "I'm not used to this," mumbles Prince, staring straight ahead through the windshield of his parked car. "I really thought I'd never do interviews again." we drive for twenty minutes, talking about Minnesota's skies, air and cops. Gradually, his voice comes up, bringing with it inflections, hand gestures and laughs. faced icons of Yahweh or Lucifer. "We're here," Monroe to talk to. Indeed, if a real-estate agent led a tour through Prince's house, one would guess that the resident was, at most, a hip suburban surgeon who likes deep-pile carpeting. "Hi," says Rande, from the kitchen, "you got a couple of messages." Prince thanks her and offers up some homemade chocolate-chip cookies. He takes a drink from a water cooler emblazoned with a Minnesota North Stars sticker and continues the."This place," he says, "is not a prison. And the only things it's a shrine to are Jesus, love and peace." Off the kitchen is a living room that holds nothing your aunt wouldn't have in her house. On the mantel are framed pictures of family and friends, including one of John Nelson playing a guitar. There's a color TV and VCR, a long coffee table supporting a dish of jellybeans, and a small silver unicorn by the mantel. Atop the large mahogany piano sits an oversize white Bible. The only unusual thing in either of the two guest bedrooms is a two-foot statue of a smiling yellow gnome covered by a swarm of butterflies. One of the monarchs is flying out of a heart-shaped hole in the gnome's chest. "A friend gave that to me, and I put it in the living room," says Prince. "But some people said it scared them, so I took it out and put it in here." Downstairs from the living room is a narrow little workroom with recording equipment and a table holding several notebooks. "Here's where I recorded all of 1999," says Prince, "all right in this room." On a low table in the corner are three Grammys. "Wendy," says Prince, "has got the Academy Award." The work space leads into the master bedroom. It's nice. And...normal. No torture devices or questionable appliances, not even a cigarette butt, beer tab or tea bag in sight. A four-poster bed above plush white carpeting, some framed pictures, one of Marilyn Monroe. A small lounging area off the bedroom provides a stereo, a lake-shore view and a comfortable place to stretch out on the floor and talk. And talk he did -- his first interview in three years. A few hours later, Prince is kneeling in front of the VCR, showing his "Raspberry Beret" video. He explains why he started the clip with a prolonged clearing of the throat. "I just did it to be sick, to do something no one else would do." He pauses and contemplates. "I turned on MTV to see the premiere of 'Raspberry Beret' and Mark Goodman was talking to the guy who discovered the backward message on 'Darling Nikki.' They were trying to figure out what the cough meant too, and it was sort of funny." He pauses again. "But I'm not getting down on him for trying. I like that. I've always had little hidden messages, and I always will." He then plugs in a videocassette of "4 the Tears in Your Eyes," which he's just sent to the Live Aid folks for the big show. "I hope they like it," he said, shrugging his shoulders. change clothes." He comes back a couple minutes later wearing another paisley jump suit, "the only kind of clothes I own." And the boots? "People say I'm wearing heels because I'm short," he says, laughing. "I wear heels because the women like 'em." A FEW MINUTES LATER, driving toward the First Avenue club, Prince is talking about the fate of the most famous landmark in Minneapolis. "Before Purple Rain," he says, "all the kids who came to First Avenue knew us, and it was just like a big, fun fashion show. The kids would dress for themselves and just try to took really cool. Once you got your thing right, you'd stop looking at someone else. You'd be yourself, and you'd feel comfortable." As we pull up in front of First Avenue, a Saturday-night crowd is milling around outside, combing their hair, smoking cigarettes, holding hands. They stare with more interest than awe as Prince gets out of the car. "You want to go to the [VIP] booth?" asks the bouncer. "Naah," says Prince. "I feel like dancing." A few feet off the packed dance floor stands the Family, taking a night off from rehearsing. Prince joins the band and laughs, kisses, soul shakes. Prince and three of Family members wade through a floor of Teddy-and-Eleanor-Mondale-brand funkettes and start moving. Many of the kids Prince passes either don't see him or pretend they don't care. Most of the rest turn their heads slightly to see the man go by, then simply continue their own motions. An hour later, he's on the road again, roaring out of downtown. Just as he's asked if there's anything in the world that he wants but doesn't have, two blondes driving daddy's Porsche speed past. "I don't," Prince says with a giggle, "have them." He catches up to the girls, rolls down the window and throws a ping-pong ball that was on the floor at them. They turn their heads to see what kind of geek is heaving ping-pong balls at them on the highway at two in the morning. When they see who it is, mouths drop, hands wave, the horn blares. Prince rolls up his window, smiles silently and speeds by.  more

Resolved Question: Question about sun ming ming the 7'8 basketball player...???

If he plays in a game, he will be unstoppable with my gameplan... step 1: walk(i know he cant run) underneath the opponents' hoop...(From what i know you cant stop a person without the ball from moving where he wants to, so this step has a 100% pass rate) step 2: catch that pass from a teammate( i know, heres the tricky part but how difficult can getting a pass be when youre 7'8 and have large hands??) step 3: stand on tip toes and dunk, others have to jump to block so he pratically has infinite "airtime" to dunk so im guessing it wont be hard... i know he has low stamina so play him a few minutes a time...hows this gameplan???  more

Resolved Question: Basketball shooting technique?
