History Of Baseball Questions asked

Open Question: What does it take to get a scholarship from Rutgers New Brunswick?

I have been taking all Honors level courses since freshman year excluding math. I take French AP, US History AP, and English AP and get B+'s in each of these courses. I get A's in science (honors), math (A level), and every elective (business), gym, and health I have taken. My GPA is probably in the 3.6 range. I am a member of DECA: national competitor and president of my chapter. I have done a moderate amount of community service. I play baseball (2 JV letters, 1 Varsity) and run track (3 Varsity letters) I am also a white male (so I will miss out on affirmative action stuff) Math + Verbal SAT: Around 1200 What are my chances of getting a partial scholarship from Rutgers New Brunswick? How much does my SAT have to improve? Sorry for the resume-like question.  more

Resolved Question: Who could have struck out Eddie Gaedel?

You know the story -- in 1951, St. Louis Browns owner Bill Veeck signed Eddie Gaedel, standing 3'7", for a promotional stunt appearance. Wearing #1/8, Gaedel was sent up to pinch-hit, under strict orders NOT to swing no matter what. Eventually the pitcher walked Gaedel on four pitches, he trotted to first base, and was removed for a pinch-runner. And that was all of Gaedel's major league career. He's still on the books (as he should be). Here's a picture of the famous plate appearance: http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0804/mlb.best.baseball.players.numbers.0-22/images/0.1.8.eddie-gaedel.jpg Gaedel's strike zone was, what?, about the size of a loaf of bread? Even smaller? Clearly he was too challenging for Tigers hurler Bob Swift, who didn't even try to throw strikes. But could someone, over the long reach of baseball history, have beaten the little guy? Someone with such immaculate control that he could nail that microscopic strike zone? Who do you think could have whiffed Gaedel (looking, of course)? I'd go with Greg Maddux, who has always put the ball where he wanted it. Wikipedia on the Gaedel's appearance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Gaedel Gaedel's stats (stat?): http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/gaedeed01.shtml I thought of this Q a week or two ago, but yeah, seeing Gaedel's name tonight re-prompted me to post it.  more

Resolved Question: Afro-Latinos: Do you ever get tired of being ignored by the media?

Everyone knows we're black and though it is sometimes downplayed, our African ancestors had a very large cultural impact on Latin America, creating a very rich culture that people of races in Latin America take part in. Yet in U.S. we are lumped together with African Americans as we have no other history to be proud of. Afro-Latinos in movies and television are almost non-existent, and even those that are present usually have their Latino heritage downplayed and it's never mentioned as race becomes a more important marker for the characters being played. It's like saying we can only be black and proud, and our culture is irrelevant. Most people don't seem to understand that there are black Latinos, and this is perpetuated even by the Hispanic media. Turn to any soap opera on Univision and Telemundo and you'll never see a black leading character. At best you may get a minor supporting role, usually in the form of a maid/servant. The only Afro Latinos that get any recognition are the baseball players, and I've even had baseball fans be completely perplexed when I've explained to them I'm Latino. And I live in NY! More than half of the guys on our baseball teams are black and fresh off the boat! So what has your experience been like? Those who aren't Afro-Latino can feel free to share your thoughts as well. Also has something like this ever happened to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkoKSMiKjTM Well there's a good point, Choc. I would say that more people come into contact with Afro Latinos than they realize, but many are born to at least one African American parent, and as such tend to assimilate more easily to that culture. But sure, the demographics in NY don't necessarily represent the rest of the country. Even so there are many popular Hispanic figures who are not Mexican, and they are allowed to get plenty of tv/movie roles and other forms of exposure as Hispanics, even though a lot of them are physically indistinguishable from white Americans. I love Gina Torres but I can only think of one role where she played someone that was Hispanic. And I'm not even sure Christina Milan falls into mainstream, but she'd be one out of a handful.  more

Voting Question: Can I get into Syracuse, Umass, Uconn, Michigan, BC, Fordham, and Penn State?

Cummulative GPA the first 2 years of HS: 2.91...which is alright. It would be higher if I didnt have an obsessive love for the New York Yankees and sucked in the first quarter (or Anger Problems...both bring down my GPA...I had a 2.72 first quarter this year and I could get a 3.40 or higher this next one). I'm going to do great on the SAT english, critical reading, essay and such and probably horrible on the Math. On ACT I estimate a 26. My extra-cirriculars: *Mentorship with Sacred Heart communications in 8th grade *Possibly interning with Chelsea FC this summer at Chelsea TV *Proud Sports Broadcasting Camp attendee *Proud Young Democrat Member *Canvasser and phone banker for Democratic Party *Traveled to Pennsylvania to get vote out this election *Pizza delivery guy, part time job *Sports editor of high school paper (head editor next year possibly) *Beat writer for local paper for football, baseball, and basketball team *I'm going to be in AP History and English next year, despite being in support and basic geometry. Resolved Question: In your lifetime, do you see the New York Giants and the New York Jets playing in the Super Bowl?

Throughout the history of Major League Baseball, you have had many Subway Series. These series included the New York Yankees of the American League playing either against the New York Giants or the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League. The last Subway Series was in 2000 between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets. As for the NFL, the New York Giants and the New York Jets have both one the Super Bowl at least once in their team history. The Giants won the Super Bowl last in 2008 at Super Bowl XLII in Arizona while the Jets only won the Super Bowl once in 1968 at Super Bowl III in Miami. Although neither the Giants or the Jets have never faced off together in the Super Bowl, do you believe in your lifetime you could see a Subway Series of the Super Bowl played between the New York Giants and the New York Jets? Why or why not?  more

Resolved Question: Baseball project for school.need help with thinking of players to include!?

at my very boring high school, packed with blonde cheerleaders, I am doing a decade project, where we have to pick a decade and pick a topic (consumer, politics, music, fashion, sports, etc.) and I knew right away I was going to chose sports.I chose to focus more on baseball, since I know a helluva lot about the game's players and history than any other sport. Anyway, I picked the 60's (wish I coulda done the 20's cuz I love learning about Lou Gehrig). I got most of the stuff:how the NL dominated pitching (Koufax, Gibson, Marichal), Roger Maris hitting homer number 61;but I need more. So I thought I would write about the players who were rookies (who became HOF'ers), and players who were retiring (who became HOF'ers) during that time. Here's what I got: ROOKIES IN 60'S: Carl Yastrzemski (1961) Reggie Jackson (1967) Johnny Bench (1967) Juan Marichal (1960) Lou Brock (1961) RETIRED IN 60'S Ted Williams (1960) Mickey Mantle (1968) Yogi Berra (1965) What I want to do with that info is add more. Can ya help me out with any of those two, either players who were rookies (who became HOF'ers) or players who were retiring (who became HOF'ers) in the 60's decade? Thanks you so much. Go Irish and Yankees -how the heck does this make me sound unpopular? My school is boring (except when there's a fight during lunch) and the cheerleaders at my school really are bimbos. Time for me to make friends? How bout it's time you find better teams to root for? Good luck.  more

Resolved Question: Please read the first chapter in my book?

Rough Draft! Also please help me in writing good details! I am new to writing books! This is the first book in my new YA book. It is called Lost, the series is called Lost and Found. If you could try to help me out in te verbs, I am only 14. Here: Prologue A s Damien Paterson was walking down the street, with a drink in his hand. Something really strange happened. Something really strange. Something so strange this case wouldn’t be figured out for a long time. He disappeared. Well people say he was kidnapped, but really no one knows what really happened. Damien’s wife explained to the police that she had NOTHING to do with her husband’s disappearance. “I… I was with my son getting him all ready for his baseball game! I did NOT do anything to my husband’s disappearance! Please just get out of my house and leave me ALONE!” And months later, the son, Jason, disappeared. They did not know what to do but arrest the mom. And she figured out that she’d gotten pregnant just after Damien disappeared. Do you dare to start reading these pages? So as we go into the future, you will experience more intense things. Things like government betraying people, making them live on the streets. But maybe, just maybe, they would find Damien someday… sometime… 1 LOST FOURTEEN YEARS LATER… Chapter One I saw my friend walking down the hallway. Well my friend, Jacob, has been walking down the hallway over, and over. I do not know why. I decided to walk up to him and see what he was doing. “Umm,” I started saying as I walked up to Jacob, “I am afraid to ask.” “Keeping myself busy, I have been here for awhile.” “How long?” “Like half - an - hour.” “Why?” “I was being tutored.” “I’m not surprised.” I mumbled to myself then coughed. “What did you say?” “I said oh, uhhh, I wouldn’t know why you want to be tutored… because how smart you are.” “Yeah, okay. What time is it?” “It is,” I said looking at my watch, “seven fifty-six. So we should go on and get our things from our lockers.” And we did. My homeroom class was Mrs. Roberts. She was our History teacher. “All right class take your seats,” She said while everyone got into a desk. “Now, you will read Chapter 3 in your History books. And while you’re doing that I want completely silence. Do I make myself clear?” Everyone nodded. “Good, now get to reading.” I turned to Chapter 3 in my book. Luckily it was about U.S. History, my favorite parts of this class. When class was over rushed out and went straight to my locker, got my stuff that I needed, and almost ran to Math class. I did this because whoever gets to Mr. Burners class you a surprise, and he has one every time. I was the first one there. “Okay, since you are the first one here I will let you skip this class.” He didn’t men literally skip it, he just meant sit and watch or go to the library. Those were our two choices. I chose the library because I would be more interested in books than whatever he’s teaching. The library was full today. I don’t really know why, but it is. I 3 LOST went to the Young Adult section (YA is my favorite type of books and most of the are suspense and those are my favorite genre of books.) I got the book Twilight. I have heard it is such a really good book. When I sat down there were seventh graders throwing paper and what not.. I decided to sit at a table that is empty. I sat at an empty table and turned to the first page and read silently. “I have heard that is a really good book.” Someone said behind me. It was our librarian. “Oh, hi Mrs. Baker. And I have heard that too.” “I hope you enjoy the book, I read it myself and finished it just yesterday! Excellent author and I am reading the second one. I’ll check it out for you.” She said. “Thanks.” “No prob-lamo!” She took the book and scanned it on her computer. When it was time to start heading back to classes it was the same old boring stuff, same, same, same! 4 LOST Chapter Two MY name is Trent Paterson. I am eleven-years-old and I go to Huvington Middle School in the town of Huvington. My dad was in a car accident when before I was born, well that’s what my mom told me. I play piano, it is the only thing I do to calm myself down when something wrong happens. I have been playing for three years. My mom is the only family I got right now. No brother, no sister, nobody except mom. I really wish I had someone else, just someone else. When I got home from school I noticed that there was an unfamiliar white truck in my driveway. I think it could be some repairman of some sort but I really wasn’t so sure. I walked up to my doorway and went inside. Once I passed the kitchen I saw a very tall man in a tight white t-shirt. He was talking to my mom unti until I got there when their heads looked at me. “Hi sweetie, how was school?” Mom asked. “Fine, who’s this?” “This is Jack Richardson, I met him at work today and we got along very well. Trent we are going out today and right now so if you don’t mind I will be back at five thirty, there’s a frozen pizza in the oven in case you get hungry. Ok?” “Ok mom.” Jack held out his hand in front of me. “Nice to meet ya.” He said as we both shook hands. “You too.” I smiled. “Well, bye!” Mom said as she took Jack’s hand and walked out of the door. “Bye…” I mumbled to myself but mom and Jack were already out the door. I went upstairs with my bag and did my homework. Now that I am in sixth grade, it’s getting tough being in middle school. I have math, social studies, and science to do. … 5 LOST Once I was done it was four thirty. I went down stairs for a quick bite of that frozen pizza. I put the oven on four hundred-twenty-five degrees. While that was going to sit in there for the next thirty minutes I went to out piano in the dining room. I really find piano one of my favorite instruments to play. The piano is everything I play. It is the main thing I do in music class, in a band, every gosh darn thing you can think of! Since it’s late November I have been recently playing Christmas music. Well even though Thanksgiving is in three days I am playing it anyways because there isn’t really any Thanksgiving music I have heard of. When the pizza was done I turned on the TV because… well there was really nothing else to do. I turned on the TV to the news. “It has been about fourteen years since Damie-” “Boring!” I said as I turned to the next channel. I took a bite of my pizza. Pepperoni, my favorite. There was nothing on TV that was good, really nothing is good around this time. “Gosh it’s cold in here.” I said to myself. I went to our fireplace in the den and put a couple of logs in it. I went to our fireplace in the den and put a couple of logs in it. Thank gosh that the fire didn’t burn out so quickly, all I had to do is just put a couple of logs in and that was it. The den had a TV and I was cold so I got my pizza out of the living room and moved in here. FOX is the channel I settled for. There was a sitcom on as usual. … I guess I fell asleep because I woke up in an instant because the fire burned out. Also snow was falling so I had to get a fire going quickly. Resolved Question: Is this the most harsh review of an album ever?

This is a review of Limp Bizkit's album "Significant Other" by some dude on an albums reviewing site. "This is the band that all the "cool" kids in the early years of highschool were into, along with fellow posers Linkin Park. All those stupid fools wearing baggy pants with the crotch part down to their knees, with those key chains or whatever they're called hanging out of their side pockets, wearing their stupid baseball caps, imitating their talentless idol Fred Durst. Those people who thought that Blink 182 and Good Charlotte were good punk bands. Y'know, the people who would sacrifice their education, and hence, their future, in favour of running after a ball in a field and dedicating their lives to some stupid teenage fad like skateboarding, which would last around 4 years, and following stupid fads like nu-metal, all to make some fat, bald, CEO, who would fit their definition of "uncool", rich. Now, back then, I wasn't really into contemporary music. And looking back now, I can understand why. With talentless hacks like Limp Biscuit (notice how bad their name looks when you spell it correctly) infecting the radiowaves with their tuneless drivel, it's no wonder I didn't find it appealing. Of course, back then, I wasn't aware of real bands like Iron Maiden and Hypocrisy and the only good music I could find was classical and videogame OSTs. This all made me feel that I was somehow "abnormal". I mean, how could so many of my classmates be wrong about bands like this? It all made me feel as if there was something wrong with me. But now, having listened to this talentless drivel, I know that there certainly wasn't. In fact, I now know that I was the only normal one there, and it was everyone else that had the problem for liking this load of feces. OK, perhaps I should explain why anyone who knows the slightest bit about music would realise that this is one of the worst albums ever made. My first problem is that the whole album is completely devoid of hooks and melody. Even the singles "Nookie" and "Break Stuff", which are widely regarded as the album's best songs, have no hooks in them. The only way to explain how these sold is marketing. For example, Limp Biscuit used to have to pay radio stations to play their singles (which also makes them some of the biggest hypocrites ever, considering there is a hidden track on this album called "Radio Sucks". Way to bite the hand that feeds you). There is absolutely nothing catchy about these singles. They have absolutely no melody whatsoever. Even I could have written better music when I was 12. The only way to explain their success is their mass exposure. Now, when an album has no melody and no hooks, it must contain some redeeming factors. Some examples are: speed, brutality, complex instrumental work, good beat, meaningful lyrics. Limp Biscuit has none of these. Instead, we get an amateur guitarist who can barely play 3 chords (hell, just listen to Break Stuff), a talentless drummer who sounds like a five year old beating the drums with no sense of speed or rhythm, a bassist who's lack of talent is hidden under the annoying, completely unnecessary, scratching of the DJ. And to top it off, some of the worst rapping and singing I have ever heard, and the most immature, meaningless, inane lyrics I have ever seen, courtesy of the worst frontman in rock 'n roll history - none other than the talentless Fred Durst. Here are some samples of Fred Durst's lyrical genius: "I did it all for the nookie, come on the nookie, come on so you can take that cookie and stick it up your(yea)" - Nookie "it's just one of those days where you don't wanna wake up everything is f****d everybody sux you don't really know why but you wanna justify rippin someone's head off. no human contact and if you interact, your life is on contract your best best is to stay awake m**********r it's just one of those days!!" - Break Stuff What is the meaning of these lyrics? It means that the standards of modern commercial music are so low that anyone reading this review could become a multi-millionaire in the music business. There is absolutely no clear rhyming pattern in any of their lyrics, and yes, they sound just as awkward when Fred Durst "raps". Speaking of the rapping, Fred Durst has got to be one of the worst rappers I have ever heard. He barely even makes an effort to stay on beat; the only good rapping on this CD comes from Method Man who features on "N 2 Gether Now". Plus his singing is karaoke at best. Fred Durst reminds me of the line from Eminem's diss against Everlast, "Quitter" - "He can't rap or sing, but he wants to do both". Although it was directed at Everlast, I think it perfectly describes Fred Durst. Many people think Limp Biscuit's early albums, including this one, are actually worth listening to. Having listened to it, I cannot understand how anyone could have liked it in the first place. The fact that this band has sold millions of re *records speaks volumes about the sad state of the music industry these days. I cannot understand how anyone who has listened to a decent amount of rock music, even other nu-metal bands, could consider this a good album. Oh I agree with the review don't get me wrong, it's a great review lol  more

Resolved Question: Are you still undecided about the Presidential election? If so, why?

If you are still undecided and before you answer, read this: 1) John McCain doesn't believe we should raise taxes on anybody during a recession. Obama does and that will prolong our economic woes. 2) John McCain has been endorsed by the NRA. Barack Obama once supported a complete ban on the manufacture and ownership of handguns in America. 3) John McCain co-sponsored a bill to fix Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac back in 2005. Had it passed, we wouldn't have had a bailout crisis. Obama took in the 2nd largest amount of money from Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. In other words, McCain tried to fix the problem while Obama was in the back pocket of the shady operators who cost the American people over 700 billion dollars. 4) Barney Frank has promised a 25% cut in defense spending if Barack Obama gets into office. John McCain would not support that policy. 5) Both Barack Obama and John McCain publicly pledged to take public financing for their campaigns. McCain kept his word. Obama lied. If he will lie to the American people about that, what else is he lying about? 6) Barack Obama has received hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks, including a million dollar earmark for his wife's hospital. John McCain has never taken an earmark. 7) John McCain's health care plan will make health care more affordable, cover more people, and will keep the market in control. Barack Obama's plan for socialized medicine will put government bureaucrats in charge, will lead to long wait times for operations and lead to a poorer quality of health care. If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see how much it costs under Barack Obama when it's "free." 8) Barack Obama says he doesn't want his daughters "punished" with a baby and that abortion is "above my pay grade." Do you think a baby is punishment? Do you think abortion is above Sarah Palin's pay grade? 9) Sarah Palin is a conservative reformer who has taken on oil companies and her own party as a mayor and a governor. Joe Biden is a career Washington insider with no executive experience who's most famous for gaffes, making things up, and being on the wrong side of almost every foreign policy issue from Vietnam to the surge. 10) Barack Obama spent twenty years going to an anti-white, anti-American church run by Jeremiah Wright. He didn't go to that church for so long because he disagreed with the message. 11) John McCain once fought for our country in Vietnam. Barack Obama has never fought for anything but his own career. 12) John McCain has literally had to decide whether to go home from a POW camp or stay and be tortured. He made the right decision. Barack Obama's first tough decision will be made in the White House. 13) John McCain pals around with Joe Lieberman, Lindsey Graham, Sarah Palin, and Phil Gramm. Barack Obama has "pal'd" around with Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, Frank Davis, and Tony Rezko. What does that say about each man's character? 14) John McCain always holds his hand over his heart for the national anthem and has never refused to wear a flag pin after calling it a "substitute for, I think, true patriotism." Do we really want to have the first President in our history who doesn't love his country? 15) For good or ill, John McCain is a moderate, but Barack Obama was the most liberal senator in America in 2007. Do you trust someone that liberal to run the country? 16) When there's an international crisis at 3 A.M. and the phone rings, you can't vote "present." 17) This is what Barack Obama thinks of Americans who live in small towns, And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations. How can someone, who thinks so little of people who don't live in big cities, truly represent all Americans in the White House? 18) Do you really want to spend the next four years listening to Barack Obama's supporters cry "racism" every time somebody criticizes or disagrees with him? 19) The mainstream media has been more biased than at any time in our lifetimes for Obama and they've launched an absolutely unprecedented smear campaign against Sarah Palin -- and worse yet, Sarah Palin's family. Do you want to reward and encourage more of that kind of behavior in the future by putting Barack Obama in the White House? 20) Barack Obama is a socialist who wants to "spread the wealth around." John McCain wants to spread the opportunity around instead of making people dependent on government. 21) John McCain has promised no more bailouts. Barack Obama has not. 22) John McCain favors judges who will stick to the Constitution. Barack Obama says he wants judges with "empathy." Would you want an umpire of a baseball game who sticks to the rules or one who has "empathy?" 23) McCain has promised to balance the budget 23) McCain has promised to balance the budget in four years and whether he makes it or not, he will undoubtedly cut spending. Obama will run trillion dollar deficits. You do the math. 24) We have the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the world and it is driving our companies overseas. John McCain wants to cut the tax to keep businesses in the U.S. and create jobs. Barack Obama does not. 25) Barack Obama will sign the Union Card Check Bill that will end the right to secret ballots for union members, thereby crippling more American industries via unionization. The unions are destroying the Big 3 automakers and the airline industry -- and under Obama, they'll be a further drag on the American economy. Furthermore, since when do we give up the right to have a secret ballot in America? John McCain opposes the Union Card Check Bill. 26) Barack Obama will sign the Fairness Doctrine into law, which is solely designed to drive conservative radio hosts off the air. 26) Barack Obama will sign the Fairness Doctrine into law, which is solely designed to drive conservative radio hosts off the air. When did we start trying to win political contests in this country by preventing our political opponents from being heard? John McCain opposes the Fairness Doctrine. 27) Barack Obama wants to force gay marriage on the whole country via the court system, which is why he favors overturning the Defense of Marriage Act. John McCain thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman, which is why he supports leaving DOMA in place. 28) John McCain favored the surge. Barack Obama did not. So, if Barack Obama had been President over the last four years, we would have already lost the war in Iraq. 29) Barack Obama wants to leave Iraq in 16 months, whether we win or not. John McCain doesn't want to risk seeing the victory our troops have bled and died for thrown away for politics' sake. 30) It would literally be dangerous to the future of our country to have a large Democratic majority in the House, a large majority in the Senate, and Obama in the White House. It doesn't even have a logical way of crowning a legitimate Champion? Computers? Polls? Opinions? What the? College football makes a mockery of the spirit of sports by not having a playoff and not crowning a legitimate Champion. Unless all the top teams play one another there is no way to say who is the best. All major sports have a playoff. Resolved Question: Earl Weaver makes Lou Pinnella and Ozzie Guillen look like sissys?

Earl Weaver is straight up the most controversial managers of Baseball history. If Rants are hilarious, much better than Ozzie Guillen (I can't even understand what Ozzie's saying half the time) Checkout Earl Weaver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YKxf3OkpJc  more
